Moving the clocks forward by one extra hour all year in the UK could lead to children getting more exercise every day, say researchers. Their study of 23,000 children found that daily activity levels were 15% to 20% higher on summer days than winter days....

Moving the clocks forward by one extra hour all year in the UK could lead to children getting more exercise every day, say researchers. The clocks are set to go back by one hour this weekend across the UK. Researchers from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and the University of Bristol analysed the activity levels of this large group of children aged five to 16... The results, published in the International Journal of Behavioural Nutrition and Physical Activity, suggest that more evening daylight can help keep children active for longer. Every child Proposals to shift the clocks forward by one additional hour for the whole year and not move them back in October, have been debated in parliament at various times over the years, but never been implemented. The study calculated that these proposals - which would give British children 200 extra waking daylight hours per year - would increase the average time children spend doing moderate to vigorous physical activity from 33 to 35 minutes a day. Dr Goodman added: "This study provides the strongest evidence to date that, in Europe and Australia, evening daylight plays a role in increasing physical activity in the late afternoon and early evening - the 'critical hours' for children's...
LOUIS • During the day, the blocks surrounding the Mount Grace Convent seem to reflect the tranquility inside the cloister walls. Police cruisers roam the College Hill neighborhood, officers frequently stopping to talk to those on the streets. City leaders often refer to this northeast neighborhood as one of the city’s most dangerous. The order, better known as the Pink Sisters because of the color of their habits, prays around the clock. Since the convent and chapel opened in 1928, there has always been at least one sister kneeling before the Blessed Sacrament. “This place is much different,” said Sister Mary Catherine Smith, who came here 50 years ago. The superior of the Holy Spirit Adoration Sisters, Smith said the neighborhood changes began in the early 1980s when a guard had to be posted outside the chapel. The changes made by the sisters reflect the decades-long decline of the neighborhood. A recent spate of violence has made College Hill a priority for police. Two weeks ago, about 80 police officers converged on the troubled neighborhood , where Police Chief Sam Dotson pledged saturation of law enforcement until the violence stops. At least three murders have occurred in the neighborhood this year, as well as other shootings.
Delegates at the U. N. 's International Telecommunication Union reportedly couldn't reach a consensus on the issue, so they have punted to a future meeting in 2015. The next leap second is currently scheduled to take place June 30. Unlike leap... Leap seconds were introduced 40 years ago in response to atomic clocks, which are the most accurate timepieces known. Since atomic clocks rely on atomic radiation rather than sunlight to tell time, they inevitably outpace the gradually lengthening solar day. A leap second, therefore, simply "pauses" all atomic clocks whenever they start getting too far ahead. and several other U. N. countries support scrapping the leap second, since it handicaps our most precise clocks to accomodate our relatively imprecise planet. "The main problem is that the leap second is usually implemented by stopping the clock for one second," he tells the AP. "However, the world doesn't stop.
