The GP everyone in Britain wishes they had: As families queue to mark his retirement, meet the doctor who for 30 years worked 15-hour days, did home visits - and laughed and cried with his patients. Generations of families queued for four hours to thank Dr Richard Hughes He is increasingly rare - to be a family doctor working around the clock Patients at Hanway Medical Practice, Portsmouth, said he was always there By Jane Fryer for the Daily... If he had the time, his hobbies would include walking in the countryside, reading books about Napoleon, watching Jeeves & Wooster on television and playing Scrabble with his family. He’s been working 15 hours a day, five days a week, and, until 2004, most weekends, too, as a GP at the Hanway Medical Practice in Portsmouth town centre. It is an ordinary busy, bustling surgery with six GPs and 11,390 patients — people of all ages, all races, all backgrounds. To mark Dr Hughes’s recent retirement, Denise Fenton, the practice manager, issued an open invitation to his patients to drop by for a cup of tea and wish him well last Saturday. Hundreds of patients turned up. The queue to see him snaked right around the block. There were three generations of some families. They queued patiently for more than four hours.
Some 60 hours after winning world 10,000m gold on Saturday night, Mo Farah was back on the track to qualify comfortably for Friday’s 5,000m final. This race was about conserving as much energy as possible as the Briton bids for a historic double at the World Athletics Championships, following the two gold medals he won at London 2012, and it was certainly a ‘job well done’. A 6am alarm clock was hardly the ideal preparation for a man who likes his sleep, but Farah and American training partner Galen Rupp – the only two athletes attempting the gruelling long-distance double – both qualified with ease. Farah, 30, came fifth in his heat in 13mins 23. 93secs and even had the energy to chat to Rupp – telling him to ‘save as much energy as you can’ - as the pair jogged down the home straight, safe in the knowledge the first five athletes were... Kenyan John Kipkoech, ranked eighth in the world this year, will be the only surprise absentee from Friday’s final after falling in his heat and finishing 10th. All the other big names, including three Ethiopians and three more Kenyans – also made... I've just been resting up. This is just prelims and it's always going to feel harder as you've got to get up in the morning. ‘I'm not a morning person and I had to get up this morning at six o'clock.
