We live in the most prosperous era of human history, and prosperity supposedly brings leisure, free time to enjoy our abundance. They continue to. The United States, for example, is the only advanced industrial nation without a law setting a minimum amount of vacation time for employees. And a study by Oxford Economics indicated that from 2000 to 2013, the average American worker's annual vacation days decreased from 20. 9 to 16. In The Big Squeeze , his 2008 book on the American labor force, Steven Greenhouse wrote that Americans... For example, many prefer to pump their own gasoline, as it gets them out of the gas station faster and thus "saves time. " Americans are very keen on saving time and money, as if we all aspire to become fast-moving tightwads. But "saving time" is a purely quantitative description: It avoids the question of what we are doing with that time, and how the time feels. To many, saving time may mean saving money. More than two centuries ago, Benjamin Franklin declared that "time is money," and many seem to view the two things as interchangeable, one convertible into the other.
Book publishers with exceptional foresight may have understood that they “had to view Amazon as both an empowering retail partner and a dangerous competitor,” as Brad Stone puts it in The Everything Store , his deeply reported, fiercely... In its early days of creative chaos, Amazon seemed to want to use the Internet to expand the potential of readers and publishers alike. Bezos hired writers and editors who supplied critical advice about books and tried to emulate on Amazon’s website “the trustworthy atmosphere of a quirky independent bookstore with refined literary tastes,” as Stone puts it. Among the management... If a book publisher did not capitulate to Amazon, it would modify its algorithms to reduce the visibility of the offending publisher’s books. within a month, “the publisher’s sales usually fell by as much as 40 percent,” Stone reports, and the chastened victim typically returned to the negotiating table. “Bezos kept pushing for more” and suggested that Amazon should negotiate with small publishers “the way a cheetah would pursue a sickly gazelle. ” This remark—a joke, one of Bezos’s lieutenants insisted—yielded a negotiating program that Amazon executives referred to as “the Gazelle Project,” under which the company pressured.
She knew she wanted to tackle some sort of series—something where she could work on one item a day—. and the around-the-clock news coverage of the upcoming presidential election gave her an obvious option: commanders-in-chief. The designer has since completed images for our first 40 presidents. "When I started to work on a president," Jannott tells Co. Design, "I did do some research to find out traits and characteristics about them—what they were known for, nicknames, etc. Some are more successful than others, but that’s all part of the process of the set, I think. But even with that scant spare time, some of the results are powerful enough to make you want to grab a history book and dive in. A few of my favorites include James Madison, his initials rendered in stretched-out letterforms, and LBJ’s, whose... "I feel like I had to start out right," she says, "and I’ve been partial to that one since. It’s also one of the more popular ones of the set. Still, she’s definitely right about some being more gripping than others—the images for the Whig presidents in particular don’t do much to elevate them out of their hazy place in history.
