Sending Kris Bryant to minors a bad call by Cubs - Boston Globe (subscription)

Baseball has made some changes to try to speed up the game, but held off on implementing a pitch clock to fix what many observers view as the biggest drag. Here’s a look at the hurlers in 2014 who took the least time between pitches — Blue Jays starter Mark Buehrle was the speediest at 15. 8 seconds — and the most — Red Sox reliever Junichi Tazawa clocked in at 29. 1 seconds — according to Baseball... Which franchises have the most pressure to win this season. Yankees, Blue Jays, Dodgers, Cubs, Padres, Tigers, Mariners, and Angels. The Jays have assembled a good team, but they haven’t made the playoffs since 1993 when they won the World Series. The Cubs have the pressure of winning now because they spent so much money on Lester. The Padres have set new expectations with rookie GM John Farrell said. “A lot of work was done receiving pitches, particularly righthanded sinkerballers, where that sinker ends up on his glove side and his ability to receive it, frame it, and present it as a strike, that’s continuing. “We think Blake is in the right spot and we think he’s going to be a good player. “He’s handling an older sort of pitchers at Triple A and matching up against older hitters and with that comes sequencing and game-calling and those nuances to the position.

The Big Coffee Table Book of Doom! - Reason (blog)

Let's turn now to the images that are supposed alarm readers about overdevelopment and overpopulation. To illustrate the Human Tide, the book shows "a rising tide of humanity cover[ing] Ipanema Beach in Rio de Janeiro. " I have been on Ipanema Beach several times, and I have never seen the number of people in the photograph chosen by the editor to illustrate the supposed human tide. Butler is right that humanity is urbanizing. Meanwhile, reducing the number of people tearing up the landscape as hardscrabble subsistence farmers ultimately means that more land can be set aside for nature. This may interest the deep ecologist Eileen Crist, whose afterword in the book, decries "the near conversion of the biosphere into a human-food pantry. Recent research by Jesse Ausubel and his colleagues at the Human Environment Program at Rockefeller University finds that humanity may have reached peak farmland. The book focuses on "overshoot," the claim that humanity's numbers are now too great for the carrying capacity of the earth to sustain.

MLB implements no-fly zone for Trevor Bauer's drone - NBCSports.com

Well, if MLB owned the land, they would have the right to declare that the airspace above their land be kept free of flying vehicles — to an extent. The land owner would have ultimate say as to whether someone could fly a remote-controlled drone over the property at a low altitude for purposes of photography. FAA rules in regards to VFR (visual flight rules) stipulates you cannot fly closer than 500 feet to any person, vessel, building, vehicle, or structure. IFR (instrument flight rules), under which commercial aircraft operate, is a different animal. FAA rules for drones (public, civil, recreation) are ongoing. Here’s the latest interpretation from the FAA’s website for model aircraft (recreation) drones:. The FAA has partnered with several industry associations to promote Know Before You Fly, a campaign to educate the public about using unmanned aircraft safely and responsibly. 1-Fly below 400 feet and remain clear of surrounding obstacles. 4-Don’t fly within 5 miles of an airport unless you contact the airport and control tower before flying. 6-Don’t fly an aircraft that weighs more than 55 lbs.
