He made 34. 1 percent of his three-point attempts, and he didn't completely implode amid a 30-win season. The one thing he didn't do was lock up his job as the franchise's starting point guard, evidenced in part by Denver's decision to select the versatile Emmanuel Whatever's gone on in this locker room, the real problem is that Lawson is 27 years old. While that's still relatively young in NBA terms, it also means Lawson risks spending another two seasons of his prime with a struggling (and rebuilding) operation. That's not the best use of his skills, and it's not the best use of Denver's resources. Such a move wouldn't have been surprising prior to Sacramento's decision to sign free-agent point guard Rajon Rondo. Lawson has ties to current Kings coach (and former Nuggets coach) George Karl, and Karl was reportedly interested in a reunion with his old floor general. The organization has its youth movement to thank for the rosier outlook, including the now-healthy Julius Randle, who enters the season as the club's ostensible starting power forward. Generally speaking, things are getting better in L. A. —all the more so if free agency yields a prized acquisition or two. But for the moment, the real excitement pertains to what's become of a young backcourt that suddenly includes two oversized point guards with all kinds of upside. Their promise is so intriguing that Bryant may spend some time at the 3 spot this season, leaving Russell and 23-year-old Jordan Clarkson to handle guard duties. It would be premature to predict any starting lineups (particularly in light of pending moves in free agency), but we can reasonably assume that head coach Byron Scott will look to make the most of his young talent—even if that means resorting to... Indeed, a backcourt combination of Russell and Clarkson would be dynamic on both ends of the floor, which is potentially great news for a club that ranked 29th league-wide last season in defensive (in)efficiency, yielding 108 points per 100...
NorthWestern Energy, operator of Kerr Dam, has notified federal agencies it may have to seek a variance from its Federal Energy Regulatory Commission license requirements. The reason: There may not be enough water to fill Flathead Lake to full pool by June 15, as required by the license, and not enough to meet minimum downstream flow requirements, either. The lake’s elevation Friday was 2,891. 1 feet, a hair below 2 feet from the full-pool mark of 2,893 feet. It notified FERC and the U. S. Department of Interior “of possible drought conditions and the potential. It remains possible inflows will be sufficient for the lake to reach full pool by June 15, NorthWestern said. “However, due to the lack of snowpack, the forecast is heavily dependent on precipitation to maintain both lake level and downstream Flathead River license required flows,” according to the company. “While no variances may be ultimately required, (NorthWestern) decided to provide the FERC and (Department of Interior), as well as other interested parties, advance notice of the potential need for a variance. Flathead Lake failed to reach full pool by June 15 in 2011 and 2008 as well, but for the opposite reason.
