WHERE OTHERS saw trees, John Fricano saw opportunity in the woodlands of Atlantic County. It was 1954 when the Vineland resident took $5,000 and bought a dream: 5 acres of land along the Black Horse Pike in Egg Harbor Township where he planned to create an amusement park for children. With the help of his wife, Esther, and other family members, Fricano, a painter, transformed the site into Storybook Land, a place for younger children to enjoy fairy-tale attractions, such as the Three Bears, Humpty Dumpty, the Old Woman in the... The park has received visitors from across the United States and Europe and Australia, but the Fricanos had a more modest goal in mind when Storybook Land opened. "In the 1950s, the Black Horse Pike was a major route to Atlantic City before the Atlantic City Expressway was built," says John Fricano III, 26, grandson of the park founder and one of the park's operations managers. Jessica Fricano, 28, also an operations manager, believes her grandfather was influenced by the fairy-tale parks that had sprung up across the country. Storybook Land, which opened three months before Disneyland in California, has adapted to changing times and consumer tastes, as the park now covers 20 acres.
He wears a blue cap and a blue shirt and his face is lit by the humming blue glow of the monitors. Thirteen thousand feet below him, Argo, an underwater search vehicle equipped with a video camera, has captured images of craters—craters that would be inexplicable outside the context of this expedition. Ballard has long been trying to find the wreck of the RMS Titanic. Not so much a needle in a haystack as a needle in a haystack at the bottom of the ocean. In his explorations he has found important vessels, and he will go on to find many more, any one of which would constitute a major find, the capstone of a career. But the Titanic isn't even Ballard's real mission. Earlier this year the United States Navy asked Ballard, who is a commander in the reserves, to assist in a secret mission to find two nuclear submarines that had been lost at sea for two decades—they needed to determine whether the subs were... And they needed Argo to do it. The Navy told Ballard that if he used Argo to find the lost subs, and if he had any time left over before the He found the subs, and now here he is in the control room, and images of these impressions on the ocean...
