On January 14th of this year, Nisman, a career prosecutor in Argentina, had made an electrifying accusation against the country’s President, Cristina Fernández de Kirchner. He charged that she had orchestrated a secret plan to scuttle the investigation of the bloodiest terrorist attack in Argentina’s history: the 1994 suicide bombing of the Asociación Mutual Israelita Argentina, the country’s largest Jewish... Nisman, a vain, meticulous fifty-one-year-old with a zest for Buenos Aires’ gaudy night life, had pursued the case for a decade, travelling frequently to the United States to get help from intelligence officials and from aides on Capitol Hill. In 2006, he indicted seven officials from the government of Iran, including its former President and Foreign Minister, whom he accused of planning and directing the attack, along with a senior leader of the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah. Months later, Nisman secured international arrest warrants for five officials, effectively preventing them from leaving Iran. Iran’s leaders scoffed at Argentina’s demands to extradite the accused, and even issued a warrant for Nisman’s arrest. From the beginning, he had the unstinting support of Argentina’s Presidents—first of Néstor Kirchner, who chose Nisman to.
The last time the Burmese slave made the same request, he was beaten almost to death. But after being gone eight years and forced to work on a boat in faraway Indonesia, Myint Naing was willing to risk everything to see his mother again. His nights were filled with dreams of her, and time was slowly stealing her face from his memory. But when he breaks into laughter, you see flashes of the boy he once was, despite all that has happened in between — a 22-year odyssey recounted by Myint and his relatives. He would run away twice from the ruthless forced labor on a fishing boat, only to realize that he could never escape from the shadow of fear. Thailand earns $7 billion a year from a seafood industry that runs on labor from the poorest parts of the country, along with Cambodia, Laos and especially Myanmar, otherwise known as Burma. As overfishing decimates stocks near Thailand's shores, trawlers have been forced to venture farther and farther into more plentiful foreign waters. The dangerous work keeps men at sea for months or even years with fake Thai identity documents, trapped aboard floating prisons run by captains with impunity.
The school has confirmed that this school year 15 pupils in Grade 5 had left or were leaving - a turnover rate of 12 per cent. The school said the average turnover rate at Grade 5 in previous years was about 10 per cent. Overall, the turnover rate was similar to last year's, the school said. One parent of a departing child knew of at least 43 primary children whose families had said they would not return for the new term year in August, many due to unhappiness with management. "After the unjust firing of the primary school vice-principal and principal, we realised how bad the situation had become," said one of the parents, who transferred her children to another international school last month. The parent said there was now "an atmosphere of fear among staff and parents" who worried they would be targeted in retaliatory action by the management if they spoke out. School spokeswoman Melanie Hnetka said around 8. 3 per cent of pupils had withdrawn this school year, similar to the 8. 4 per cent last year. She added that in the new school year, 108 children would start at its kindergarten and 162 would enter the 13 grades.
