Repair of an old book

This Saturday morning, after a long week at work, I woke up at five after going to bed at 6 the previous night thinking that I’d wake up two hours later so I could do some lifting at a nearby gym, only to be woken up by my alarm clock set at 5... I bought this copy six years ago from a bookstore near Hoan Kiem Lake in Hanoi. The bookstore was on the second floor of a building whose ground floor was used by an old man selling birds. Along with titles in Vietnamese as well as books translated in the Vietnamese are Wordsworth Classics. I bought this book by Dostoevsky and Gustave Flaubert’s Madame Bovary for 50,000. Since then, the guilt-ridden Raskolnikov became one of my favorite literary characters. I stroked my copy like how I would stroke that cat our family had had when I was only 12, with care. I glued the spine together and scotch-taped the pages that needed scotch taping. I keep those I already read because I have hope that someday my younger brother or sister would pick them up, read them, and discover a universe that I inhabited while reading them. Or, I keep them because someday, when I become tired of all the prerequisites of living, I shall escape from all these with my books that need repairing, a pair of scissors, a roll of scotch tape, and the ever reliable Elmer’s glue.

I is for Insomnia

) I can fall asleep quickly, boom, light’s out, I’m out. Then I wake up – I feel like I’ve been asleep all night and I’m WIDE awake, ready to start my day. Look at the clock. I know this because I have to actually get up out of bed a couple of times a night to unwind my nightgown. I know I’m getting some sleep. But I’m getting it in very short bursts and I know this because I’ve done a highly scientific and not at all silly test. Mostly to disprove Mr Tater’s theory that I really DO sleep all night, and am just dreaming that I wake up. I put a little notepad and pen right on the edge of my nightstand and every time I looked at the clock in the night, I wrote down the time. 11:32 – 11:48 – 12:18 – 12:45 – 12:58 and so on. Sometimes it was only a few minutes between times, sometimes as much as 1/2 an hour, but the fact is, I AM awake at many many times during the night. I’ve stayed up til the magic hour of 11:30. And what happens. I fall asleep quickly, wake up at 1, and every 10 minutes thereafter. No REALLY break it. Ok, I’ve stayed up til 2:30. That’s right, just powered on through it (knowing I had to be up at 5, ugh) and guess what. I fell asleep quickly and stayed asleep. I didn’t wake up til the alarm went off at.

According to the Renaissance world picture, life was like a wheel of fortune, where you are sometimes up and sometimes down. My cat is a little version of a tiger, otherwise he is huge. Anyway, my cat is my own private Richard Parker. Recently I was asked why I liked cats, if I identify with them and yes, I do. My first cat was a black brilliant beauty, a direct descendant of the Egyptian goddess Bastet, graceful, elegant, dignified and terribly proud, but loving and loved. My second cat was a furry imitation of a white and black panda, lazy and totally careless, loved and terribly funny when kitty. My third cat is this little tiger who is too large for a cat, so eager to be loved that he acts like a dog. Once muscular and handsome, almost sexy, he has now become like a lazy and totally in love husband who seems to drink too much beer, he has a belly and he's always behind me. He slept by my side last night, silently purring, warming me or warming...
