Tom Tillotson lives beside a closed-down ski mountain in a town that doesn’t exist. He doesn’t miss the chairlift that used to be out back. And he doesn’t really miss the people who used to vacation at his late father’s hotel — the now-crumbling Balsams Resort. “They don’t call anymore,” Tillotson said in the reclaimed barn he calls his home. They left the interstate, drove the winding state road three hours north of where most people live into the piney woods, past blueberry fields and through the jagged granite cliff faces known as Dixville Notch. Dixville was always too small to be recognized as an actual town, but like a political version of Brigadoon, it appeared every four years. Polls closed by 12:07 a. m. , ensuring that the results and the funny dateline would appear the day after primaries and election days in newspapers throughout the country. But when the Balsams closed in 2011, it took Dixville with it. There were no more jobs, and now, other than Tillotson and his wife, there are no more residents. Tillotson feared that the midnight vote, a rite brought here by his father, would be gone too.
Urban Meyer made no secret of his disappointment in the playing development of Tommy Schutt a year ago. The coach was looking for quality depth from Schutt and others for Ohio State’s interior defensive line, but in Meyer’s mind, it always seemed to be lacking. “Schutt’s had a good camp,” Meyer said. “The clock has been ticking. The clock is ticking on the senior defensive lineman’s college career. Schutt, the first player to commit to Ohio State after Meyer was hired in late 2011, played in 10 games in his freshman season and drew good reviews in terms of potential. So yes, Schutt’s clock is ticking, and he knows it. >> Got a question about Ohio State football. “The mindset this offseason really was the difference for me,” Schutt said. “Kind of for me, it was not necessarily a letdown (in effort), but not performing the way I should the past couple of years is something that’s always been stuck in the back of my head. I put a lot of work in … and I’m really looking forward to getting going this season. Part of that change was physical, trimming about 15 pounds, down to 290. “I feel much better,” Schutt said.
5, at the former Atkinson High School Building, 300 W. Henry St. in Atkinson. Bidding starts at 6 p. m. , unless an overflow of items require an earlier start. Christmas tour: On the second Saturday of December -- Dec. 12 this year -- Angel Mintz and Glenn Jenkins host the Home Tour and Tree Festival at the old high school building. For $8 you get to view 40 to 50 locally-decorated Christmas trees, tour of eight-10 Atkinson homes decorated for the holidays, and then return to the auditorium for a buffet dinner. Details: 910-283-3000. On that night, auctioneer and Atkinson icon Angel Mintz gets to the podium at 6 o'clock sharp. She starts begging for bids that can end up at $1 for a child's potty-chair or $10,000 for a Cadillac Escalade, and the chaos, occasionally controlled, can run till midnight. The Angel's Antiques and Auction hoedown fills the old school's auditorium, with its windowed air-conditioning units whining for relief, as thousands of items and hundreds of buyers are shuffled about. Nodded Pete Pridgen, who plopped down in a dilapidated E-Z chair, eating a sandwich and drinking a soda: “I just live a few miles down the road. He became the entertainment when one of the floor managers loudly described the E-Z chair's highlights and Mintz started encouraging bids to purchase it. “But without me in it,” said Pridgen.
