It’s that time of the year when my thoughts once again turn to hay making and it is now, more than at any other time, that I recall my life in the farmhouse tree, the name, which as a little tacker, I gave my three hundred-year-old family... Here, in those carefree days of innocence, those days of blowing dandelion clocks across the fields, those days of making daisy chains and of running helter-skelter-helter through the swathes, the scent of hay drenched every inch of the farm... In a hedge bank, bracken snake heads explode up through the undergrowth, the tightly furled fronds thrusting ever highly by the day. In the mowing mead, the wind washes in waves over the green sea. In those days the hay meads were filled with a laughter of flowers, an open smile of petals – Betony, Yellow Rattle, Meadow Buttercup, Red and Dutch Clover and Bird’s Foot Trefoil, to name just six of the summer blooms. Check the dangling three-foot-long strand of sea weed hanging from a rusty nail in the pound house, brought home from the previous Sunday school summer outing coach trip to Teignmouth. When all the auguries were giving the advice my father was hoping for, the cutting of our two hay meads began. In my 1950s childhood, this task was carried out with a tractor and mowing machine, by our mechanised neighbouring farmer Ron Down, addressed by me as Mr Ron.
I was, for that matter, unsure whether the New Orleans Jazz football team (not to be confused with the pre-Utah NBA franchise) actually existed in the world beyond cyberspace. Two weeks earlier I had stumbled upon the website of the Stars Football League , an upstart spring league consisting of what appeared to be eight teams. Being late July, my internal football clock had already begun to itch for training camp, and with the lingering uncertainty around the NFL's labor situation, I decided I'd give the SFL a shot. The league's website was curiously devoid of seemingly basic information like schedules or rosters, or even an explanation of why there were no schedules or rosters. My suspicions were raised even further when, surfing Craigslist one day, I came upon this ad:. "Pro football team GM (new orleans): The New Orleans Jazz are looking to fill their GM opening. "Jazz Pro Football Team (New Orleans): The New Orleans Jazz of the Stars Football League are looking for exp. football players for the up coming season. We are looking for players with pro, college, or semi pro exp. All this, mind you, while the league’s website was up and running and promoting itself as if games were imminent.
The formula was created by Edgar Dale and Jeanne S. Chall and was published in 1948 in their book " A formula for predicting readability " (out of print).
