I wasn't working early so had not set my alarm clock. However, as I emerged from my dreams and opened my eyes I found I couldn't move. I looked around myself and recognized my bedroom with morning light at the window filtered by the curtains. I struggled as I tried to move and wake up fully. it's alarming to go through. I once had it when I was visiting my girlfriend and was lying beside her in bed and she was awake. I called to her for help through my frozen lips and could hear my own voice. This happens to me about once a month, usually when I'm in a light sleep, in the early morning or when I'm napping. It's caused by the mechanisms in the body of sleep and wakefulness overlapping. Sometimes when we wake up, this paralysing mechanism continues to work when it shouldn't, leaving us wide awake but unable to move. For me this involves just a few minutes of discomfort every so often, but a few times this experience has taken on a sinister additional element. Last year I woke up to find myself in a state of paralysis as usual, but when I opened my eyes and looked around my familiar bedroom I saw that I was not alone.
I'm not one to find inspiration in everyday ordinary things but I can admit that spring teaches me a lot of things about life. That this certain experience has hit us so hard that we may, to this day, doubt ourselves so much because of it. I know it's not the most encouraging or strong thing to find hope in but even grass grows back after being under frozen layers of... Even after -30 and purple fingers, even after the ice that lines sidewalks like fragments of broken glass and all you can see is the frost layer and your distorted reflection. What ever you learned from that "cold winter" I just hope your soul never feels that frost-bitten ever again. The numbness defrosts, the snow melts, and things end up changing and it eventually ends. Everything ends and I guess I just have to keep reminding myself that like the annoying red alarm clock on the side of the dresser. You make me feel like I could build bridges and fly south and never come home, but even if you are north and I am so far out of reach, your existence has left more of an imprint on me that a repetitive use of heroin and I know I promised myself...
It’s a navajo tradition where a bunch of women get together and talk to an expectant woman about birthing stories, mothering stories, and just kind of get all excited about being a mom again. Hearing a bunch of other birthing stories made me SOOOO grateful for how you came in to the world–fast and with a bunch of excitement. I told the other moms about how I was struggling to hold still while they were sewing me up, but then Dad held you up to me. When I saw your HUGE eyes looking at me, I felt an inspiration I’d never felt before. It was like now that I was a mom, I could do hard things I couldn’t do before because I had a whole new reason to. I loved remembering that. Another part of the blessingway is to share quotes about motherhood/womanhood. I liked it because while I remember when you first started walking (out in the Youngs’ backyard) and your first word (hot), I think I smile the biggest at little tiny moments that aren’t necessarily big milestones, but that are simple and wonderful. You gasped and started dancing around, all excited. You helped me make sandwiches and pack a lunch (along with a whole bunch of stuffed animals and books and toys that I discreetly snuck back out of the bag). We went to a park and ate our picnic. I ate our lunch while you played, coming back every 5-10 minutes for a little nibble. After a good hour and a half of hard playing, we packed up and went to the library. They were doing preschool playtime so you entertained yourself playing with all the toys, and especially with getting dressed up in necklaces and tutus.
