Memmott: On car mirrors, cardinals rule
As far as I know, Rochester does not have an official bird. If there were a vote, the peregrine falcon would do quite well, given the 24/7 exposure the bird gets on rfalconcam.com. Given their admirable work rate, hummingbirds also might be a suitable ...

From the panting yellow lab with the nasty ear infection to the quivering Siamese cat in need a nail trim, the Veterinary Treatment Facility at Dover Air Force Base is not as high-drama as one might expect. Established in the 1980s to care for the base's military working dogs, the center also provides care for private animals belonging to service members, retirees, reservists and National Guard members. Vet services here typically cost 25% to 50% less than a private vet office. rabies shots are $10. Open five days a week, the facility does same-day appointments. Staffed by three active duty Army members and five civilians, the clinic sees an estimated 3,500 patients a year. Orthopedic surgeries and emergencies are referred to private vets in the area. Dog grooming and boarding are not offered. The base's seven military dogs are top priority. and veterinarian Amanda Jeffries is on call round-the-clock in case a military dog breaks a toenail or has a bout with diarrhea due to stress. A few months back, she received an impromptu visit from more than a half-dozen U. S. Marine Corps dogs traveling from their assignment in Afghanistan back to Japan.

If there were a vote, the peregrine falcon would do quite well, given the 24/7 exposure the bird gets on rfalconcam. He sits on top of the side-view mirror of one of our cars for a moment, and then he flaps down and looks at his reflection. After a moment, he flaps back up to the top of the mirror, sits for a bit and then flaps down and looks at himself in the mirror again. It would be a charming start of our day if only the cardinal didn't leave behind evidence of his presence on the mirror and the side of the car. I think there's more than one cardinal involved in this caper, and I asked bird guru Bob Marcotte, my former colleague at the Democrat and Chronicle , what they are up to. "They are definitely reacting to the image of themselves, which they regard... Good heavens, seeing yourself in a mirror is not all that much fun in the first place, but continually seeing an evil version has to be horrifying. Bob didn't offer any theories on the calling card that the cardinal leaves behind on the car, but some bloggers speculate that it may be the bird's way of marking his turf. The side-view mirror issue doesn't come up in Bob's terrific book, Birds of the Genesee. But he does chronicle the bird's presence in this area.
