Fuse's Surfer Blood Tour Journals, Pt. 2: Jersey, Philly, Chi-Town - fuse.tv

Surfer Blood are enduring a time in their career filled with professional highs and emotional challenges. Stay with Fuse for an intimate look into the life and times of John Paul Pitts of Surfer Blood. Wednesday, May 13: Asbury Park, NJ. The 13th was our day off (kind of), but first we had a radio station visit at WBJB in New Jersey. We managed to navigate the turbulent New Jersey turnpike, but when we got to the radio station we realized the remaining directions were hopelessly vague. It's good to be busy, but so far it had been all work and no play and we were all excited to have some chill time in Asbury Park. We stayed at a friend’s house in Ocean Grove, one town over, in a three-story late 19th-century home. From the curb it looks like an actual dollhouse. The whole town feels like something from a forgotten time. On the inside you’ll find antique wooden floors, a claw-foot tub, and sinks in pretty much every room from when it used to be a boarding house. Also, the house is very haunted, I refuse to sleep on the third floor because I’ve had the weirdest dreams of my life up there.

Yoon premiere is lost in the stars at Prototype Festival - New York Classical Review

The mysteries of meaning in the dreams of others are—despite the received wisdom of a century of analysis— truly unknowable to us. As fascinating as an image may be to see or to read about, the resonance of meaning it carries is so deeply... This is the problem faced by Bora Yoon’s multimedia work Sunken Cathedral, which had its world premiere Wednesday night in the Prototype Festival at La MaMa. As beautifully made as it is, Sunken Cathedral doesn’t overcome that obstacle, its vast ambition often dazzling to observe, but a resonant sense of meaning never reaches into the audience. Sunken Cathedral ’s title sparks thoughts in the mind of musical impressionism and Escher, possibly even the Breton myth that inspired Debussy to compose La cathédrale engloutie. For Yoon, Sunken Cathedral —developed through a residency at HERE Arts Center, and co-produced by Beth Morrison Projects—is “the architecture of the subconscious,” the place where dreams, instincts, inchoate feelings, and even the idea of the...

The Battle Hymn of the Papier-Mâché Mother - The New Yorker

While raising three daughters in Leonia, New Jersey, in the nineteen-seventies and eighties, my mother, Lucy Davidson Rosenfeld, researched and wrote about art, but it was clear that she saw her real job as nurturing the creative impulses and... With her encouragement, I spent my weekends making dollhouse furniture and junk sculptures, playing chamber music and practicing the violin, and writing invented art-history journals and travel guides to made-up islands. I was only vaguely aware that, at similar hours of the day, classmates of mine were doing seemingly exotic things like watching cartoons on TV, which was strictly forbidden in our house. Every year, my mother would write a rhyming poem to commemorate my birthday. The poems were always written on thick white paper (sometimes the cardboard that comes inside men’s shirts) and decorated with curlicues and flowers: “If you’ll forgive the corn, / we bless the day that you were born”. ” As I approached adolescence, I began to find these poems painful and embarrassing. It wasn’t only that my mother insisted I read them aloud at dinner, forcing me to compliment her on her efforts. It was that these poems were attempts to sum up everything that she found special about me. . Now that you are twelve, my dear,. There are lots of choices we could have made. To describe you as a musician playing violina.
