Can A Street Drug Treat Depression?
By LaTina Emerson. For a normal happy person, getting out of bed in the morning is simply how the day gets started. But for an individual suffering from depression, it can prove to be a near impossible task. While there are many medications on the ...

By LaTina Emerson. While there are many medications on the market to treat depression, a large population of depressed patients can’t seem to shake the blues, even with the aid of prescription drugs. Psychiatrists and other mental health professionals are calling for new treatments for depression as they watch millions of patients suffer from this common, but serious, illness. Scott Myers, director of drug discovery at NeurOp , a company in Georgia State’s CollabTech Business Incubator , says researchers are working on a new depression treatment. A recent New York Times article reports that almost half of depressed patients are not being treated adequately by existing drugs. This means if the depression isn’t being caused by low levels of these specific neurotransmitters, the patient will continue to suffer. Even with these undesirable side effects, researchers believe ketamine may be the new answer for treating depression. Ketamine, when used as an anesthetic, works by blocking N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors in the brain.
Jeff Green has become what the Memphis Grizzlies envisioned, a dependable and athletic wing player who at times can emerge as a primary offensive threat. After the Grizzlies’ practice Tuesday at Emerson College in advance of Wednesday night’s game vs. the Celtics at TD Garden, Green said he had no hard feelings about being traded from Boston and has embraced his new role with a new and improved team. “It’s a business, it happens,” Green said of the Jan. I just went upon each day like I’m still a Celtic, like I gotta play hard every game. Since joining Memphis, Green has averaged 12. 5 points and 4. 1 rebounds on 40 percent shooting. Unlike his tenure with the Celtics, Green has been consistent, scoring in double figures in 21 of his 26 games (22 starts). “I knew guys prior to coming to this situation for a couple of years,” Green said. Coming into this situation I didn’t think was a challenge because I didn’t have to change who I was. My goal was to come in and play hard, just like I did when I was [in Boston]. While the Celtics were in rebuild mode over the past 1½ seasons, looking to Green to be a major contributor but losing on most nights, the Grizzlies had the NBA’s third-best record entering Tuesday, two games ahead of the Rockets for the second... “I felt like when I was [in Boston], the goal was to win,” he said. “I’m here [in Memphis], the goal is to win, nothing changes.
Elliott Albers, director of the Center for Behavioral Neuroscience at Georgia State University, has been studying the circadian clock, which plays an important role in sleep and synchronizes the body’s activities with a 24-hour day-night cycle,... Two years ago, he was awarded a $1. 6 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to study communication within the suprachiasmatic nucleus, the area of the brain that contains the circadian clock. Albers is trying to identify what happens in this region that keeps the body in sync with the day-night cycle and resets the body’s clock after environmental time changes such as jet-lag. When the clock becomes desynchronized, studies have found increased incidence of a variety of disorders such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, metabolic disorders, sleep-wake disorders and even early death. The circadian clock can easily become desynchronized in shift workers such as traffic controllers, autoworkers, police officers and nurses who have frequently changing schedules, instead of one permanent shift. Also, rotating workers through shift changes more quickly, perhaps every three or four days versus every seven days, is better for health and work-life.
