The Providence Journal (R. I. ), July 10, 2015. At some point, spending money you do not have catches up with you. In the eyes of many, years of attempts to reform Greece through austerity measures — including deep spending cuts and higher taxes — have been punitive and ill-planned, battering the economy and making the damage worse. But at the bottom of this all is spending that is unsustainable and a political system that has been corrupted by special interests. Greece's debt-to-gross-domestic-product ratio is a staggering 177 percent. According to The Wall Street Journal, Greece spends 18 percent of GDP on public pensions, compared with 7 percent in Ireland and 5 percent in the United States. Political corruption, high taxes and excessive spending have made it difficult to impossible for businesses to thrive in Greece, thus killing, or at least severely weakening, the goose that lays the golden eggs to pay for everything. Political philosophers and historians have long observed that republics fall when citizens get into the habit of using the power of the ballot to extract excessive amounts of money from others in the society. While modern societies depend on robust governments that provide welfare, they also depend on vigorous economies that produce the wealth to fund them.
Chris “AV” Avant barely sleeps anymore. His hustle has no punch clock, knows no break and has never felt the breeze of a vacation. Avant is known by his on-stage persona “AV The Great” and by his K104 gig as on-air personality, Chris Cole. AV makes quantity quality, having his hands in multiple projects and is a behind-the-scenes mastermind in dictating Denton rap culture. Which makes the recent Digi Meds produced documentary, I’m From Texas , featuring his work ethic so magnetic. In a series of vignettes, Avant opens up to the audience about his family, his craft and his neighborhood. He is unabashed in his criticism and unapologetic towards the systemic plight that plagues neighborhoods like Avant’s across the country. The documentary is worth a look for its two central characters, Avant and the milieu of Denton, which serves as both antagonist and romantic counterpoint to Avant’s aspirations. That last ridiculously-named group is the synth-heavy side project of George Quartz -bassist Jeremy Johnson , along with the classically-trained Jake Schrock.
There are no interior walls in Stephen Stefanou’s apartment. The entire 2,500-square-foot space is covered in grass cloth, including walls, ceilings, and doors. The master bed to the right of the living room is blocked from view by a console. The bed linens are by Frette, and the table in the background is lapis lazuli veneered marble with an acrylic base by Allan Knight. There are no interior walls in Stephen Stefanou’s apartment. For the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics, he created a 46,000-square-foot cranberry bog in the shape of the Olympic logo. He’s currently working on a 100-foot-tall water clock obelisk sheathed in rock crystal. When he’s not performing super-human feats at work, Stefanou resides in a high-rise on tree-lined Maple Avenue, where he has lived for 35 years.
