Kentucky was supposed to make a deep run in the NCAA Tournament and send Bria Goss, Jennifer O'Neill, Jelleah Sidney and Azia Bishop off in style. The seventh-seeded Flyers built an early nine-point lead, but UK battled back to go up five with less than nine minutes remaining behind Makayla Epps, who scored 29 points. From there it was a seesaw battle, with Dayton burying a pair of 3-pointers in the final 1:08. The shots by Kelley Austria and Amber Deane both broke ties, with Deane's serving as the go-ahead basket. It came with the shot clock running down and O'Neill guarding her with 24 seconds remaining. "Personally it's tough for me just because I'm the one that really lost the game," O'Neill said. "I let her hit that 3-point shot. Of course, O'Neill - who scored 16 points - was far from the only player who played a role in the defeat. Dayton shot 56. 6 percent from the field and 11 of 18 from 3-point range, numbers that ballooned to 64 percent and 5 of 8 after halftime. The defense that's locked down over the last three weeks returned to the form that appeared too often prior to a meeting the four seniors called with Mitchell on Feb.
From the final play to the whole 50-minute game to her 42-point performance in it, Makayla Epps didn't need to say much more to describe what had just happened. "Crazy," Epps said. Epps, however, was talking only about the final possession that led to the buzzer-beating shot she used to send No. 10 Kentucky (19-5, 8-3 Southeastern Conference) to a thrilling 92-90 double-overtime win over No. 13/15 Mississippi State (23-4,... Matthew Mitchell didn't call timeout, instead opting to tell Epps to run the clock down and attack as the shot clock neared zero. "I just thought it was kind of silly to have it in anybody else's hands but hers there at the end, no matter if four were guarding her," Mitchell said. Epps would get a good first look, but missed a short jumper. Somehow, Jelleah Sidney came away with the offensive rebound in a mad scrum as the clock reached five seconds remaining. "I feel like all 12 of my teammates crashed the glass on that one," Epps said. "Jelleah Sidney, sometimes she has the tendency to throw the ball really hard at us," Epps said. Epps got it, and put the ball on the glass and through the basket with 0. 6 seconds on the clock. "And then Epps, we'd missed so many, and that one was as tough as any one that you'll ever shoot and we make that one," Mitchell said.
RIDGEWOOD — Authorities investigating Sunday morning’s firing of dozens of shots at Old Paramus Reformed Church — site of a sharp Revolutionary War battle — reported no new information on the case Monday. no threats have been reported against the church or its pastor, the Reverend Rob Miller, according to police. Miller could not be reached for comment Monday on the firing of at least 30 shots into the building, which the pastor has said occurred before morning services and resulted in damage, including holes through stained glass windows. The church grounds occupy a prominent place in Bergen County’s Revolutionary era history: More than two centuries ago, many more shots were fired on the site as British and American forces clashed in bloody combat. 10, 1780, a British cavalry force of 300 had intended to attack the American regiment stationed at the church, but heavy snow and difficult roads prevented it from doing so, according to "The Revolutionary War in Bergen County,” edited by Carol... In the early morning of March 22, 1780, two different British forces converged on the Continentals at the church, with one British group coming down on the west side of River Road, according to Ridgewood historian and librarian Peggy Norris said. John Howard reported "I found them [the Americans] drawn up behind a stone wall before the church,". The second group of British soldiers, who had just burned down the Hackensack courthouse, came from Paramus Road.
