Johannesburg - I’ve never seen so many cell-phone cameras. Seriously, we’ve had our fair share of latest and greatest supercars on test here, and I know the kind of attention new Ferraris, Lamborghinis and McLarens get. But nothing, and I mean nothing, has come close to the paparazzi-like levels of snapping achieved by BMW’s new i8, which we road-tested just ahead of its launch in South Africa later this month. One guy even fashioned an imaginary camera from his two thumbs and index fingers, and proceeded to click a series of make-believe photos from every angle while I topped up the Beemer’s petrol tank. I can just picture him uploading the imaginary files to his imaginary desktop via an imaginary USB cable. Post on imaginary Instagram. There’s no denying it oozes style from every one of its plastic body panels, but not that much more so than any other current supercar. A big chunk of the South African general public simply adores this brand, and it’s been a long while since such a low-slung and sexy-looking machine has come from Munich. RELATIVELY AFFORDABLE. True, hybrid supercars are popping up all over the place these days, but this one, at R1. 775-million is a relatively affordable one. And by relatively affordable I mean it’s an absolute bargain compared to today’s 918s, P1s and LaFerraris.
What is it. : The entry-spec model we're testing here is likely to be the biggest seller in the BMW 4-series range. There are three very good reasons for this: it emits 124g/km of CO2, it can cover a claimed 60mpg on the combined cycle and it's the second cheapest model in the range. Like all 4-series models, the 420d shares its same basic architecture with the F30-generation 3-series. It is slightly longer and wider than the Three, but substantially lower, which means it has the lowest centre of gravity in BMW ’s model range. The 420d is powered by the same 181bhp, 2. 0-litre turbodiesel as the 320d. It makes peak power at 4000rpm and hits 280lb ft between 1750-2750rpm. BMW claims a 7. 5sec 0-62mph time and a top speed of 149mph. An eight-speed automatic gearbox and BMW’s xDrive four-wheel-drive system are available as options, but the model we're testing has the standard-fit six-speed manual gearbox powering the rear wheels. 0-litre 4-cylinder turbodiesel offers huge flexibility, and is far more potent than its 7. 5sec 0-62mph time suggests. The six-speed manual gearbox is far from the slickest we've encountered.
The stunning two-seater concept, created along with legendary Italian design and coach building house Touring Superleggera, went on display along with BMW’s Vision Future Luxury and Rolls Royce’s Phantom Drophead Coupe Waterspeed. Called MINI Superleggera Vision, this new one off Mini is an amalgamation of classic curves from a bygone era and the most up-to-date all electric powertrain. Seen in a Como Blue exterior paint, front end of the New Mini Superleggera Vision Concept sports rounded head lamps, hexagonal grille, fog lamps and a classic Mini stripes on a contoured aluminium hood. An analogue clock, retro style steering wheel and chrome interior rear view mirrors were also part of its interior make-up. Conceived by BMW Group’s Mini division and Italian design and coach-building firm Touring Superleggera, no details of the car’s power plant were revealed. This exclusive interpretation of an open-top two-seater was created by MINI and Touring Superleggera, the tradition-steeped design and coach building house based in Milan. The MINI Superleggera Vision is on the one hand a classic roadster, a compact and agile two-seater, expressing the most minimalist and emotional style of motoring.
