This is the first major exhibition since his death in 1942 to concentrate entirely on Ravilious as a painter rather than a printmaker, and through more than 80 watercolours one sees him not just as the familiar genius of English graphic art but as... Ravilious is probably still best known for the magical alphabet mug designed for Wedgwood in 1937, with its fantastical lexicon of tiny images – the kettle singing on its hearth, the eerie diver down among the fishes, the birdcage, the old rocking... It shows what drew Ravilious, and that is of course half of the joy of his art – the world he chose to depict. The secret door in the kitchen-garden wall, the scrubbed table bearing a fresh new loaf for tea, the rolling Wiltshire hills with pictures of horses cut into the chalk: it looks at first like the enchanted world of childhood. His paintings ask you to pay attention to ordinary beauty, to look at the overlooked once more, and they chime with our folk knowledge of drystone walls, blue and white striped china, cold linoleum, the hoed rows of vegetables gardens, the... But from the very start, the shadows in his art condense and distort the shapes of this world, so that every image has its latent strangeness. The river Cuckmere scrolling through the landscape like Arabic script.
Rich Mattson, who owns/operates/lives at the Range-based studio calls the whole package a rock 'n' roll bed and breakfast. He's had the space since 2005 and has hosted a Homegrown Music Festival Field Guide-worth of bands — Hobo Nephews of Uncle Frank. "It's a getaway retreat," said Germaine Gemberling, who has lived in the multipurpose space with Mattson for the past five years. Mattson still had ties to his native Iron Range when he was living in Minneapolis, working in studios and playing in bands in the late 1980s and 1990s. In the mid-2000s, he realized that, thanks to technology, he could record music anywhere — even... "I came through the front door, and the place possessed me," Mattson said. From there, he said, everything fell into place. There is a single pew located inside the front door of Mattson and Gemberling's home — the only pew he kept as he built up his studio. Mattson sold 18 benches on eBay, he said, which got him enough startup money to begin the remodel. The walls are covered with scribbles from visiting musicians. The Keep Aways have signed it and so did Wino, Wi. The lone bedroom was the church nursery, and Mattson added a window.
ATLANTA, Ga. – It’s a long way from mainland China to Miami Circle in Atlanta, but that’s exactly how far one determined bidder traveled to vie for a Chinese porcelain hand-painted wall pocket from the late 19th or early 20th century. The urn form piece was the top lot at Ahlers & Ogletree Auction Gallery’s Spring Estates Auction, held March 21-22, hammering for $50,000. The auction was packed with more than 1,000 lots, ranging from Asian objects to original works of art to... It was held in Ahlers & Ogletree’s gallery, located at 715 Miami Circle in Atlanta. Also offered were Japanese ceramics and fine scroll paintings by Soichi Furuta, period furniture, lamps and lighting, hand-made Persian rugs, mirrors and canes. The porcelain wall pocket, 6 ¾ inches tall, was marked to the underside with the four-character cobalt underglaze Qianlong Nian Zhi mark. It was decorated lower right with a yellow sculpted flower, and had a hand-painted decoration to the front of six lines of calligraphic marks, plus two red reign marks. An oil on canvas painting by Albert E. (Beanie) Backus (Am. , 1906-1991), one of the legendary Highwaymen artists of the 1950s and ‘60s, went to a phone bidder for $20,000. The work, done circa 1960s and signed by Backus, was titled View of... A second pattern Confederate national flag, made during the time of the Civil War and possibly issued to the Confederate States.
