The time is finally here for me to show you our new kitchen, I have to admit things aren't fully finished yet as we are still waiting for a few bits to arrive but I simply couldn't wait any longer to show you all as I'm just so in love with this... The new kitchen is super bright and the space is now much bigger as we got rid of the garage and knocked both rooms into one, I have to say this was the best decision for us as we didn't really use the garage and we now have a huge family and... Next to this area there is also a new downstairs toilet which is not complete yet, I shall do an update when this is done and show you the area when it's finished. Ever since starting my kitchen mission I have been obsessed with Pinterest as some of you may know and my favourite kitchen designs were all Scandinavian/Nordic so I tried to incorporate that into our kitchen. We are currently awaiting the delivery of our dining room chairs so for the time being we are using a couple of other pieces, this Ghost Chair from MDM Furniture looks absolutely perfect in the new dining area I kind of wish we had four because... It's such a chic piece, I aim to use this in my dressing room once the chairs arrive although I think it would still look fab in this room even when they are here it's.
So as promised, here is a little breakdown of my finds from last week. The little knitted bootees in the centre will go in a piece of work and the little knitted tea cosy on the right will go on my little tea pot of course. I was really lucky with this bag and there are some little darlin's in this one. Bag towards front contains little printing blocks - love these - for all sorts of reasons. I have always liked these in any form right from being small when I had the little John Bull printing set and my dad was a printer by trade so maybe it is bred in me. Ok, so a bit random I grant you but as always there is a method in my madness. Some women it's shoes and handbags - me it's books and the one on the left is pure nostalgia. I first read this book years ago it is such a simple little book but it brings back happy memories for me. It's not one of her novels just a random diary of her walks on Putney Common with her dogs, talking about the people she meets, the dogs,... Lovely little book which I lent to someone and never got back - been looking for it ever since - a joyful find. The one on the right is on account of my interest in kitchen sink realism - which is described as a British cultural movement form the late 50's and early 60's which involved theatre, art, film, tv and plays.
A cockroach makes a twisted path from one corner of our room to the other and distracts me from my ritual. I start again, rewrapping my hair in a scarf that still smells of my mother, touching my nose to the worn rug. I wonder what cockroaches leave to their daughters. Because I hear her lovers sigh through the wall, I know she hears me praying. I know she hears the other things that take place here. Our cockroaches take refuge in her kitchen when we try to kill them. We release it in the kitchen monthly. I am still wiping the white dust from the corners of the counter when it is time to do it again. I was not a child bride, as my mother was. My mother watched me through the days I said I needed to think. Perhaps he would beat me, perhaps he would drink, but I did not think so. We knew his family, his sisters were my friends. Whatever happened, at least I would not be the one left behind to wipe up after my brother’s meals, to clean the salt-encrusted tissue from beside their beds, to scrub their laundry and fetch their tea. My mother wanted what she had seen of America on TV—the shiny cars, refrigerators big enough to hold an entire sheep—if not for herself than for me. Four days.
