In digital age, 911 calls can't always find you - The Courier-Journal

In Kentucky, calls to 911 made on wireless phones don't always provide reliable location information to emergency dispatch personnel, despite the fact technology exists to improve location accuracy. Cell phone 911 call location accuracy varies widely across the country, according to a review of hundreds of pages of local, state and federal documents obtained by USA TODAY and more than 40 newspapers and television stations across the country. The technological and regulatory shortfall that creates the problem has worsened in recent years as a growing share of 911 calls — currently 70 percent — are made from a wireless phone. Unlike landline calls, which automatically display address information, federal regulations do not hold wireless 911 call technology to the same standard. Last month, the Federal Communications Commission, with the cooperation of two national public safety associations and the four largest wireless carriers, announced stricter standards for wireless location accuracy. "The vast majority of 911 calls are from mobile phones, and we are not where we need to be on location accuracy for wireless 911 calls," wrote retired rear admiral David Simpson, chief of the FCC Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau, in a... Technology exists to improve that accuracy, the FCC noted in its order, particularly for wireless 911 calls made indoors.

Hanging Out With Someone Who Walked On The Moon - Hackaday

Lunar dune buggy rides, piloting the most powerful machine made by humankind, stuck thrusters, landing, eating, sleeping, and working on the moon. I was recently given the opportunity to sit in on the MIT course, Engineering Apollo: the Moon Project as a Complex System where I met David Scott who landed on the moon as commander of Apollo 15. I not only sat in on a long Q and A session I also... Background David Scott flew on Gemini 8 with Neil Armstrong during the stuck thruster incident. He was the command module pilot in Apollo 9 which was a test flight of the complete Apollo spacecraft system. He landed on the moon as commander of Apollo 15 , which was the first mission to carry the lunar rover. Personality David lives up to his legendary status as an Apollo astronaut while also being very approachable. David’s deep understanding of everything about the Apollo system was impressive, not a question couldn’t be answered in detail and with additional nuance that may not even be in the history books yet. Gemini 8 and the stuck thruster You’ve probably heard of the stuck thruster incident during Gemini 8. One of the maneuvering thrusters stuck-open, causing the spacecraft to rotate faster and faster and faster again. They survived it by shutting down the one thruster system and using the reentry thrusters to stop the spin.

Amazon's elusive 'Echo' intelligent home speaker falls short in first major review - GeekWire

The result is a rare, in-depth, hands-on review of Amazon’s intelligent, talking home speaker/virtual assistant. CNet reviewer David Carnoy praises the canister-style device’s voice recognition, attractive design and natural-sounding voice of “Alexa,” the built-in virtual assistant. However, he finds problems such as a lack of iOS support (the companion app is currently only available for Android and Amazon devices), the absence of a built-in battery (the device has to be plugged in), sound distortion at higher volumes,... “The big limitation right now is that beyond the weather and dictionary, Echo only seems to interface with Wikipedia and a few other data repositories (for jokes, for instance), but not Google or another search engine such as Bing,” he writes. Perhaps in the future Amazon will work out a deal with its Seattle neighbor Microsoft to bring additional Bing capabilities to the device. Carnoy gives the product 3 stars (out of 5) but concludes that Echo is “a work in progress, a beta product if there ever was one. That helps to explain why Amazon has limited the availability of the product so severely. Amazon customers need to request an invitation for the privilege of buying an Echo , at a price of $99 for Amazon Prime members and $199 for everyone else. In my case, for example, I requested an invite within a few minutes of the announcement , as an Amazon Prime member, but have yet to get an invite.
