Lawyer says Amtrak engineer was 'knocked out' and has 'no recollection' of ... - NJ.com

21, 2007 as Sandra Palmer of University City says goodbye to her boyfriend, Clyde Simpson, as he leaves for work in Chicago at the Amtrak station in St. Louis. Bostian was the engineer of the Amtrak train that derailed in Philadelphia. Louis Post-Dispatch/TNS) (Huy Richard Mach) PHILADELPHIA — The engineer at the controls of the speeding Amtrak train that lurched off the tracks in Philadelphia, killing at least seven people, has no recollection of the crash and wasn't on his... Lawyer Robert Goggin told ABC News that the engineer, Brandon Bostian, 32, of New York, suffered a concussion in Tuesday night's wreck and had 14 staples in his head, along with stitches in one leg. Federal investigators have determined that the train was barreling through the city at 106 mph before it ran off the rails along a sharp curve where the speed limit drops to just 50 mph. But he said Bostian does not recall anything out of the ordinary and does not remember using the emergency brake, which investigators say was applied moments before the crash. The lawyer said the next thing the engineer remembered was coming to, looking for his bag, retrieving his cellphone and calling 911 for help. He said the engineer's cellphone was off and stored in his bag before the accident, as required.

Madison municipal Internet projects fall behind due to mayoral election ... - Madison.com

A municipal Internet study and possible Internet access pilot for low-income neighborhoods in Madison have stalled in recent months with uncertainty and confusion about the direction the project is taking. The city’s Digital Technology Committee is handling the two initiatives, which are aimed at addressing the digital divide and exploring the possibility of a municipal Internet system. A request for proposals that was supposed to be drafted by February has still not materialized, the committee lost its chair, Erik Paulson, this month when Mayor Paul Soglin appointed telecommunications professor Barry Orton in his place, and... Mark Clear said of the latest committee meeting, which took place May 14 and was the first the committee had held since February. There is also $100,000 allocated to fund a planning and feasibility study on a cooperative municipal Internet utility and another $250,000 allocated in 2016 for capital requirements. But the issue became a contentious one between Soglin and challenger Scott Resnick in the mayoral election, as Resnick had spearheaded both of the initiatives as an alder.

Verizon is buying AOL for about $4.4 billion to advance online and mobile ... - The Denver Channel

NEW YORK - Verizon is buying AOL for about $4. 4 billion, advancing the telecom's push in both mobile and advertising fields. The New York company is the country's largest wireless carrier as well as an Internet and TV provider - and wireless video and targeted advertising is seen as the next battleground for customers. "AOL's focus on unifying the advertising experience across display, video, mobile and TV makes it an attractive asset because advertisers are looking for better ways to reach their audience across screens," said Lauren Fisher, analyst at eMarketer. "Coupled with Verizon's existing mobile (and streaming video) presence, the companies' combined ad offerings mean massive cross-screen reach with much richer audience data. Increasingly, companies like Verizon and Google are looking to connect together the video and other content viewers want, the digital "pipes" that deliver the content and the advertising networks that support it. Verizon said last month that it... That has put Verizon at odds with major content companies like ESPN as it sees more customers cut the cord in favor of video that is streamed online. Verizon will gain access to AOL's advanced advertising technology, including its "One by AOL" integrated platform.
