How credit cards get us to overspend - Minneapolis Star Tribune

“Credit cards make it easy to shop without thinking,” said Clements, founder of New York-based MagnifyMoney, a personal finance website. Countless studies show that spending with plastic means that we spend more. And we don’t just spend more money in absolute terms. “One of the more famous studies showed that, in some cases, people were willing to pay double for an item when they used a credit card. Spending $50 that we can’t afford every week can easily turn into $10,000 of debt within four years. “People want to come home from vacation with happy memories, not with unanticipated and unmanageable credit card bills,” said Guy Abramo, president of Experian Consumer Services. “Racking up excessive credit card debt without a plan to pay it off can put people, especially millennials, in a bind that could affect their financial health and credit status for years. com welcomes and encourages readers to comment and engage in substantive, mutually respectful exchanges over news topics. MINNEAPOLIS -- The Gophers men's hockey team is heating up at the right time. After Minnesota was struggling one month ago and sat at fourth place in the conference, some fans wondered what was wrong with the Gophers. Now after four straight wins capped by Saturday's 2-0 victory over Michigan , Minnesota is tied with the Wolverines for first place in the Big Ten. "It was a weekend we obviously needed," said Gophers coach Don Lucia. The victory improved Minnesota's record to 16-9-3 overall and 6-2-3-0 in the Big Ten. With four weeks remaining in the regular season, the Gophers and Wolverines will continue to vie for the Big Ten crown it what should be an exciting finish to the year. Minnesota got goals Saturday from seniors Seth Ambroz and Kyle Rau, while goalie Adam Wilcox stopped all 26 shots he faced to shut out the highest-scoring offense in college hockey. The Gophers held the Wolverines to just two goals in two games at Mariucci Arena after losing by scores of 4-3 and 7-5 in Ann Arbor back in early January. One day after Friday's comfortable 6-2 victory, Saturday was close from start to finish for the Gophers. Unlike the night before when the Gophers had three.

North Carolina academic scandal will end quietly, just like everyone wanted - SB Nation

After a four-year wait which felt like it spanned multiple decades, we finally have the full gauntlet of allegations the NCAA is levying against the University of North Carolina. The trend of everyone having to re-learn the major bullet points from this story every time something major happens (once every 5-8 months) will continue through at least the summer of 2015. If anyone is even willing to partake in that endeavor by... Thursday's news has officially penned the writing we should have been reading on the wall for the past four years: UNC men's basketball is not going to get hammered by the NCAA. The only major punishment that remains in play is a postseason ban for the potential 2015-16 preseason No. 1 Heels, and that news would elicit some not-so-mild shock at this point. The NCAA's 59-page NOA (featuring a 732-page list of exhibits) is predictably dense and sheds little light as to what exact punishments may soon be tossed in the direction of Chapel Hill. Even though "academic" and "fraud" have combined to be the headlining two-word phrase of this "scandal," the NCAA declined to investigate the allegation that over a span of 18 years, 3,100 students (47 percent of which were athletes) at UNC took... Those courses, according to the allegations, allowed the students to receive quality grades without having to show up for class, turn in papers or take tests.
