SkyMall, the in-flight magazine of inventions fantastic and absurd, was the catalog that every airplane passenger loved to mock — at least until the company declared bankruptcy last week. Why oh why didn't we appreciate SkyMall soon enough. The catalog echoes the 20th-century French poet Comte de Lautréamont's famous surrealist dictum that beauty lays in the "chance meeting on a dissecting table of a sewing machine and an umbrella. In fact, SkyMall's legacy goes far beyond a cultural in-joke for the absurdity of conspicuous consumption. SkyMall as we knew it is going away, but I think we can look to its stylistic predecessors and the art that it helped create for comfort. Because SkyMall may be dead, but SkyMallism is thriving more than ever. SkyMall belongs to the world of surrealists. SkyMall was founded in 1990 as a same-day delivery sale system for airports and riders, but to find SkyMallism's sources, we have to go back to the turn of the previous century.
A big reason for its success can be attributed to how it fully embraced a user-centric approach to design before many of its competitors even bothered to consider it. From the day Steve Jobs returned to Apple in 1997, Apple design became capital-D... But in the process of correcting design flaws, distancing itself from the gimmickry of its peers, and embracing a new, slick aesthetic, Apple left behind the playfulness and personality-filled designs of the late 1990s and early 2000s. And where... monotonous, metallic sea of laptops, phones and tablets from companies who lack the ability to define their own vision and aesthetic. This glass and metal gospel has been helped along by tech pundits, who have not necessarily been prepared to transition from evaluating CPU performance to analyzing design. Thus, holding all other products up against Apple’s own represented a convenient and safe way for reviewers to jump into the design conversation without fully grasping the fundamentals. And the last five or six years have had one dominant tone: Apple design is good, and the more a gadget looks and feels like an Apple product, the better it is. This maybe simplifies the sentiment, but I think it’s still accurate.
These wearable smart devices make life easier for the user. Wearable devices are usually light and small. Typical characteristics include: Small Displays (LED or LCD) Limited Space for User Interface Need to be Easy to Access Have Low Power Requirements Need to be Low in Cost Many wearable devices, however, still have clunky click buttons for a user... In comparison, a touch interface provides a more intuitive user interface. Wearables with small displays can incorporate a touchscreen for gestures or a swipe interface. Touchpads on headphones can be used for gestures to implement an intuitive user interface. A 3 Channel Device can be used for swipe activation and once on, use the three channels as individual buttons. Wearables with displays could use single area zone buttons for simpler designs. Devices such as the IQS333 [a] and the IQS213A [b] are devices suitable for these applications. For a slider or swipe activation design, Figure 3 below illustrates the electrode design.
