Rape case sheds light on elite prep school's sordid side - Fox News

When his trial begins Monday, prosecutors are expected to call current and former students to testify about the sexual culture at one of the country's most selective boarding schools. On a campus where upperclassmen studiously avoid their younger peers in most settings, Labrie told a detective some students "take great pride" in having sex with younger students before they leave school. Labrie also told the detective of a contest where boys compete to "score" with the most girls, keeping a running tally written in indelible marker on a wall behind washing machines. He acknowledged to the detective he was "trying to be number one in the sexual scoring at St. Paul's School," the detective wrote. A student leader honored at graduation --two days after the alleged assault -- with the Rector's Award for "selfless devotion to school activities," Labrie was accepted to Harvard but the school said in September that he is no longer enrolled. He told the detective that he tried to educate other students not to engage in Senior Salute and that the school wasn't doing enough to curtail the tradition.

How Frank Gifford Inspired Frederick Exley to Write the Classic A Fans Notes - Daily Beast

In 1987, I was writing for the Village Voice and covering the phone for the paper’s sports section (They had one back then. ) One lazy Tuesday after the week’s edition had been put to bed, I answered a call from a guy who wanted to write about football. He called himself Fred, said he lived in the Village and had written a couple of books and done some magazine writing. His ideas sounded good to me. I took down his name and number, promised to pass his queries on to the editor, and told him I’d call him back soon. It was one of those books that you don’t read in college courses, that usually gets recommended to you by that strange friend who read Borges while you were reading Updike. This was how I stumbled across about half of my favorite books—Christina Stead’s The Man Who Loved Children , Flann O’Brien’s At Swim Two Birds , and Marilynne Robinson’s Housekeeping , books like that. When I first came to New York, I was at the Strand when a friend had handed me a copy of A Fan’s Notes. Flipping through it on the subway, I came across a passage, though, which lit me up: “I cheered for him [Gifford] with such inordinate enthusiasm, that after a time he became my alter ego, that part of me which had its being in the competitive... Each time I heard the roar of the crowd, it roared in my ears as much for me as for him.

True detective: back to school for a new generation of sleuths - Irish Independent

electrical surveillance and counter surveillance. Evolving technology has both expanded the potential for crime, and the means of detecting it, while traditional areas such as compo culture will always be with us. Ireland's laws surrounding surveillance and admissible evidence have lagged far... The person behind it is Sandra Mara, who for many years was Ireland's sole female detective. Mara has been lobbying governments to regulate the PI business for decades. Her father, Bill Kavanagh, opened Ireland's first detective agency in 1947. Concerned that the business was infested with chancers and fly-by-nights, Bill began lobbying for proper regulation in the early 1960s, repeatedly hitting a brick wall. When Haughey was Justice Minister in the 1960s, Kavanagh attempted to import state-of-the-art electronic surveillance equipment from the States. It was stopped at Shannon Airport, where Customs slapped a huge import duty on it. Kavanagh appealed to Haughey, who agreed to allow it in at a nominal duty, provided the gardaí could borrow it whenever the need arose. Kavanagh agreed, but the guards "needed" his gadgets an awful lot, with the result he found himself trotting up and down to Garda HQ in the Phoenix Park seeking his own equipment.
