Undersea exploration: Shipwrecks tell the story of our human exploits
Perhaps there might be a repeat of a great find at a previous wreck: a metal astronomical calculator, about the size of a mantel clock, that could tell the phases of the moon, the positions of the planets and even the dates of the Olympics, and ...

Earth's magnetic field could reverse in just one lifetime
At the heart of the Earth is a solid inner core of iron with a temperature of around 5,700° C (10,200° F), and about two thirds of the size of the Moon. It is solid at this temperature because of immense gravitational force, however, it also has an ...

Greek technical diver Alexandros Sotirou conducts a training dive in the Exosuit at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. Luis Lamar photo/WHOI - Return to Antikythera, 2014. Shipwrecks, Ed O’Brien believes, “tell the story of the human condition. ” And as the diving safety officer of Shipboard Scientific Services at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, he’s seen a few from both above and below the waves. O’Brien, a graduate of Massachusetts Maritime Academy, spoke to the Cape Cod Technology Council on April 3 about how the latest advances in undersea exploration cast new light on some of the oldest shipwrecks in the world – the ones around the... The dive took place last September and October, in a very deep spot unusually abundant with marine life, an area once briefly explored by Jacques Cousteau in 1976. Because the area of interest was too deep for traditional SCUBA equipment yet not... ” Another might remind some of the “Dr. Strangelove” movie – the researcher rides a long cylinder called a “diver propulsion vehicle,” with camera and map built in. It turned out to be usable only for short periods, not for any technological...
A Jasper family is looking for the person or persons involved in a burglary that took their last few items. A couple months ago we told you the uncanny story of the Brewster's who lost everything a tornado. Jasper Police Department is now investigating the burglary of the family's storage unit. December 27th was the day an F1 category tornado spun down Brewster St without warning. A home and new cars were destroyed, but the Brewster family was grateful that everyone was safe. Several things went missing from their storage unit in Jasper. We're all still here, and all this can be replaced," the Brewster's said in December when they lost their home. Jasper police department is seeking help from the community, asking that they report the items, a flat screen TV, a grandfather clock, an antique mantle clock, and family portraits.
A new study by a team of scientists from Italy, France, Columbia University and the University of California, Berkeley, demonstrates that the Earth's magnetic field could change polarity in less than 100 years. The last magnetic reversal occurred some 786,000 years ago and was previously thought to have taken several thousand years but, if the researchers are right, the real time it may take for the flip to occur could actually be closer to the span of a... Changes in temperature, the flow up and down of various metals, and reactions to centuries-long changes in composition densities are all theorized to be in some way responsible for the shift in the direction and intensity of this magnetic field. The new research into this phenomenon is based on measurements taken of the magnetic field alignment of sedimentary layers in a prehistoric lake site in the Sulmona basin of the Apennine Mountains east of Rome, Italy, which show the change in... An Italian research team led by Leonardo Sagnotti of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology measured the magnetic orientations contained in the sediments that amassed on the ancient lake bed and, because the lake sediments were laid...
