The main fiber optic cable for AT&T connecting the north coast to the rest of the world was cut at about 9:50 a. m. Thursday morning, knocking out 9-1-1 services in seven communities, shutting off the internet and crashing cell phone service. The Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office anonymous tip-line is 707-234-2100. . The repairs took nearly 24 hours to complete, with some services returning by the early morning hours of Friday morning. When the main fiber optic cable to the coast was damaged by a vehicle accident in Comptche in August 2014 it took 48 hours to repair. Humboldt County had a series of fiber optic cable slashings in March and April 2013 which left much of that county without service for days. Unlike Mendocino County, Humboldt County was connected to the universe by a second fiber optic cable routed along Highway 36 so county customers weren’t entirely dependent upon the cable paralleling Highway 101 through Mendocino County. Willits response Within the county, calls into 9-1-1 were re-routed to Howard Forest Station, the county’s secondary dispatch center. In Willits, city staff, Little Lake Fire Department (LLFD), Willits Police Department (WPD), schools, and other groups quickly responded to the widespread outage.
I worked 5 days a week with Tuesday and Wednesday’s off… I was up fairly early for the start of “ my weekend” on Tuesday September 11TH when I saw the wall to wall coverage. I called Chuck Custer who was our News Director and he said come in at 2:30pm… then after the second plane hit and then after a 3rd plane went down in Shanksville Pennsylvania … Chuck called *me* back and he said. “get a shower and come right in”… I Worked from 11:30AM on Tuesday Morning until 2:30 AM Wednesday Morning…. I had covered Charlie over the years and he was always accommodating and great “ tape”… On 9/11 Charlie was in the South Tower, working for the State Department of Tax enforcement. On the morning it happened, I was in Columbus, Indiana, as the Program Director and Morning Show Host at Country station WKKG FM. During that time, Indiana did not observe semi-annual time changes, so while things started happening in the 8 AM... ” Remember, the Internet was still somewhat new, and we didn’t have a television in the building, so we could only get our information from our Network News Feed (in this case ABC) and the Associated Press wires. At first the music stations all aired News updates between songs, not knowing exactly what was going on, but also stressing to the people of Bartholomew County, Indiana this was in New York City, far, far.
Steve Lee knows when his mother gets up in the morning, walks into the living room, opens the front door to get the paper and takes her medications in the kitchen. Lee’s 80-something mother lives alone in a smart home. “I put a small system in her house that enables me to keep an eye on her,” said Lee, the director of technical services at Universal Devices in Encino, Calif. Smart homes are becoming more common as people push the boundaries of digital technology to help them look after their health and security, control their carbon footprint and make living easier. The Lauterette home in Northern Virginia is a textbook example of how to live digitally. “I have over a hundred switches connected to appliances,” said Jeff Lauterette, director of technology at the National Petroleum Council, who lives with his wife, Cassie, and two children in a three-level, 6,000-square-foot house. A few weeks ago, a vehicle suspected of being involved in a Leesburg hit-and-run accident ended up behind the Lauterette house, captured on the video camera installed in their back yard. “It was dark when we got home at night so we didn’t see it,” Jeff Lauterette said. ” (The suspect was arrested and charged with a felony hit and run, according to Leesburg police.
