– Many antiques in about as many collecting categories gathered over the years by Jim “Jimmy” Heffernan of Texas will be sold without reserve (no minimums, everything goes) on Saturday, Feb. 21, by Woody Auction, at the Maize Recreation Center in Maize, Kansas (a suburb of Wichita). “He came to us with a treasure trove of antique items about ten years ago and we sold pretty much everything, but no sooner had that sale ended than he began collecting again and here we are,” said Jason Woody of Woody Auction. One of the last items to be sold will be a display case, made specifically for displaying umbrellas, walking sticks and canes, with spaces for 100 items. The case, 48 inches by 34 inches and with a mirror back and curved glass top that lifts for easy access, is filled with 30 collectible pieces. They are a mix of umbrellas, canes and walking sticks, with highlights featuring a Sevres porcelain handle, embossed rolled gold handles, sterling silver handles and more. The display case was made by Showcase & Store Fixture Works of Kansas City, Mo. A separate lot will consist of three vintage umbrellas with ornate embossed gold and mother of pearl handles. The set shows the Noritake green wreath mark and the bowl measures 9 inches by 13 inches. Geishas in elaborate kimonos and ghost-white faces can be seen, or heard practising their songs and instruments: the drum or the three-stringed shamisen. At the shop where the Fukushima family has made shamisen for 130 years, visitors are allowed to practise too. In response to our summons by xylophone (serving as a bell), we were led upstairs for the obligatory green tea, before being let loose on the shamisen with instructions on how to play Sakura, Sakura (Cherry Blossom, Cherry Blossom), a simple folk...
Independently owned shops offer touches that chains and bigger stores often don’t, from personal service to whimsical goods you’ll never find at the mall. That’s why this holiday season, we’re turning the spotlight on local businesses for this Independent Shopping Guide. We surveyed Hillsborough, Pinellas and Pasco counties to find 60 of our favorite locally owned businesses. Our goal: To offer holiday shopping suggestions for anyone who wants to support the local economy. From clothing and jewelry to home decor, from gifts for foodies to gear for weekend warriors, we’re confident you’ll be able to find something for everyone on your list. We couldn’t list every independent business in Tampa Bay — for every shop we visited, there were probably five more we wish we could have included. Our hope is that once you check out the wares at these shops, you’ll be encouraged to visit the locally owned businesses in your own neighborhood. You’ll never know what you might find. And you’ll never know what you might miss when they’re gone. Support Florida artists with a handcrafted gift from Florida Craftsmen. During the holidays, the gallery brings in even more artwork, jewelry, ornaments and other gift items from more than 250 Florida artists.
