The Lansing native, now a Munster resident, has spent the last year completely gutting and renovating two buildings — one a former resale shop, the other a former floral store — on Main Street in downtown Griffith. His craft brewery, New Oberpfalz Brewing, is expected to open its 1,800 square-foot taproom Thursday at 121 E. Main St. Lehnerer has invested more than $600,000 in the brewery after securing a U. S. Small Business Administration-backed loan. You won't find any Bavarian kitsch, any cuckoo clocks, in the building. Craft breweries are booming in the region as consumer tastes generally have shifted more toward local and artisanal and away from mass-market and mass-produced. The number of craft breweries statewide jumped to 63 at the start of last year, up from 46 in 2011. Two other craft breweries — Pokro Brewing Co. and Wildrose Brewing — also plan to open in Griffith soon. New Oberpfalz differentiates itself from the crop of craft breweries that have recently opened in Northwest Indiana, including Four Fathers in Valparaiso and Burn 'Em Brewing in Michigan City, with its Bavarian theme.
The winning design for this year’s Oktoberfest button almost caused a fight between twin sisters, until La Crosse native Ann Garrity relented and retrieved her colorful drawing from the trash. Chosen from 68 entries in the annual button contest, Garrity’s design features a cuckoo clock flanked by a woman representing her 21-year-old daughter, Marcie, decked out in a dirndl, and a man in the likeness of her 18-year-old son, James,... The clock is superimposed on a building at the entry of the Oktoberfest grounds. “I was just trying to work everybody in because Oktoberfest has been such a big part of my family,” said Garrity, whose parents, Bernie and Pat Mattie, took her and Annette to the first fest when they were just 8 months old. The button schematic doesn’t boldly proclaim how many years the annual festival has been celebrated in La Crosse but subtly works it in for folks with sharp eyes. ” The slogan inspired her to include the Germanic cuckoo clock imposed upon the entrance to the South Side Festgrounds, she said. Unlike designs in recent years, Garrity’s pattern is hand-drawn with colored pencils in a broad palette of hues. “It’s really unique after a significant number of years of computerized designs,” said Kevin Buelow, president of the La Crosse Festivals board.
If the Department of Veterans Affairs wants to take down John Gualtier's life story, it's going to take a while. The Vinton retiree was one of the first to volunteer for a new project in which VA staffers interview veterans and write up short biographies. The resulting essays are to be attached to the veterans' medical charts, to help VA health care providers understand their patients' perspectives. "During combat, when I was into some really gory stuff, I never gave any thought about the effects it might have on me later," he told Stephanie Henrickson, a nurse who coordinates a mental health program for the regional VA system based in Iowa... Henrickson sat across from Gualtier at the VA's Coralville clinic one morning last week, taking notes in pen and capturing his gravelly voice on a digital recorder. She has interviewed about 15 veterans so far as part of a pilot project in the Iowa City area and five other U. S. locations. Most of Henrickson's interviews have taken an hour or so, but Gualtier's has required several sessions. In the most recent session, Henrickson asked Gualtier about his childhood in a small Ohio town during the Depression. When the war started, Gualtier's buddies and.
