1833 meteor shower had locals believing the world was ending - Richmond Daily News

1833 meteor shower had locals believing the world was ending By Linda Emley. Last week I got an email from Scott Fisher, who is the host and producer of a radio talk show called Extreme Genes – America’s Family History Radio Show. His show is based out of Salt Lake City and is heard on 30 different radio stations. He read a story I wrote a few years ago entitled, “The night the stars fell,” and wanted to interview me for his radio show. I went back and read over my story and decided it would be a good time to run this story again because we are having a meteor shower this week. The 2015 Perseid meteor shower started around July 13 and will be visible in the sky until Aug. It’s called the Perseid meteor shower since it seems to originate from the constellation Perseus. The Perseid meteor shower peaks on Aug. I took a break and looked on Facebook to see what the rest of the world was doing and ran across a post by my friend, Karen Stigall, that mentioned she had been outside watching a meteor shower. I was so tired, I decided to pull a story from the past about shooting stars.

Does School Start Too Early? In Ocean County, Some Say Yes - Patch.com

As the start of the new school year approaches, teenagers and parents already are dreading the thought of the alarm clock -- which most teens say goes off way too early. Teenagers who don’t get enough sleep are more likely to use drugs and alcohol, be overweight and underperform academically, the CDC says. The center recommends at least 8. 5 to 9. 5 hours of sleep per night, and that schools should start at 8:30 a. m. at the earliest. It echoes a study and recommendation last from the American Academy of Pediatrics, which urged schools to adopt start times of 8:30 a. m. at the earliest. While critics often cite video games, social media and other factors for teenagers not getting to bed early enough, the scientists say a change in natural sleep patterns that occurs when children hit puberty is actually to blame. “That delay on your internal clock is one of the earliest signs of puberty. It makes it really difficult for the teenager to fall asleep before 11 o’clock,” Anne Wheaton, author of the CDC study, told Patch. “If you try to go to bed by 11, and get the adequate amount of sleep, then you push school start times back until 8:30. ”. But that’s not exactly happening across America or in much of New Jersey, including Brick Township and Ocean County.
