A guide to a good night's sleep - Independent Online

A recent poll found six in ten of us don’t get enough sleep - a greater number than ever before. The average adult needs between seven and eight hours of sleep a night to stay healthy and, while sinking occasionally below this doesn’t necessarily matter, a regular nightly total of less than seven does and is associated with numerous problems... Dr Guy Meadows, sleep researcher and clinical director of The Sleep School, believes it’s symptomatic of a greater shift. “We are working longer hours than ever before - far longer than we set aside for sleep - so we stay up late, keen for a bit of down time, surrounded by technology that excites our brains too close to bedtime. Oxford University scientists found we are getting one to two hours’ less sleep than people 60 years ago. Colin Espie, professor of sleep medicine at Oxford University, says stress invariably plays a role. People wait until bedtime to think about their day, tomorrow, their life, the future and, worst of all, worry about sleep itself and how they will cope tomorrow without it. This makes sleeps even more elusive. WHY DO WE NEED TO SLEEP.

How Ideo Redesigned Monday to Be Less Awful - Wired

Your bad Monday actually starts on Sunday. Hours before your alarm jolts you awake, your mind is already stockpiling anxieties about the week ahead. Then Monday happens and guess what: It’s not nearly as painful as you thought it was going to be. “Monday in the abstract is really bad,” says Ingrid Fetell, a design director at Ideo’s New York office. Ideo set out to redesign it. How exactly does one go about redesigning a day. To start, Fetell and her colleagues looked at an entirely different day of the week. “It actually helps us pin down what’s happening on Monday when we understand why Friday feels so good,” she says. First: Make The Act Of Waking Up More Pleasant Waking up sucks. Waking up to the blaring default alarm sound on your phone. It’s an alarm clock that gently shakes you from your slumber with a child’s laughter. Studies have shown that our brains respond to laughter by lighting up in the premotor cortex, the same area of our brain that prepares our face to smile, Fetell says. In other words, waking up to laughter means you’re neurologically waking up with a.

8 Tips to Help You Wake Up and Get Out of Bed Fast - PopSugar Australia

It's always unpleasant to drag yourself out of that comfy place, so here are some tips to get you out of bed quickly and help you wake up alert:. Keep a drink on your bedside table A glass of water first thing in the morning can wake you right up. For extreme cases, leaving some coffee or another caffeinated drink like Mountain Dew on your bedside table might be the thing to get yourself... Place your alarm clock strategically If you place your alarm clock across the room or outside your door, this might force you walk to the clock to shut it off. Get an alarm clock that lights up You can mimic waking up naturally with this Wake Up Bright clock. This alarm clock gradually glows brighter and brighter and acts like your own mini-sunrise, so you will no longer be jerked awake by jarring noises. Download this alarm app that will force you out of your bed This ingenious alarm app called SpinMe will only turn off if you get out of bed and spin around two times. Don't drink caffeine or alcohol the night before It takes awhile for caffeine and alcohol to get out of your system, so for a better night's sleep, refrain from imbibing these liquids the night before. Try smelling salts Smelling salts have been reviving people for hundreds of years, but you don't have to smell something distasteful.
