His Other Wife: A Short Story
The house was dark except for a glow of light coming from the kitchen. The phone shrilled again, and Aliyah groaned as she pushed herself off the couch and walked over to where the cordless sat on a wall table near the front door. “Hello?” “Girl, open ...

” Aliyah rolled her eyes as she deleted the voicemail message then pressed the “end call” button on her cell phone. Her uncle had converted to Islam when she was in high school and had been influential in her own decision to become Muslim, and for that, she would always be grateful. But for the past eight months Aliyah was becoming increasingly annoyed with her uncle. But Aliyah couldn't tell her uncle that. If there was anyone to blame for her marriage falling apart, it was Aliyah herself. She was the one who'd eagerly introduced Matthew to her uncle and begged him to support the marriage. She'd foolishly believed that if she did everything right, everything would turn out all right. Matthew was one of the good guys, Aliyah couldn't deny that. Matthew had been Muslim only a year when they'd met, and Aliyah had been Muslim for eight. It wasn't until they were living together as husband and wife that the seven years between their Islamic experiences felt like light years. Aliyah collapsed on the couch of the living room and tossed the cell phone on a cushion next to her.
awaiting another run at Tide greatness on the eve of the National Championship Game. No, many among our faithful probably thought, after that one loss, that this would be another in a long string of great seasons that fell short of the championship bracket. For when Football Loki stands with you, no one can stand against you. That one loss was a galvanizing event for this group of Crimson Tiders to be sure, the baptism of fire which tempered their mighty steel. And with a few akido flips of Football Loki's quick wrist, the path was laid bare for the Tide to become the only team featured in the first two incarnations of the College Football Playoffs. So now, with his eternal gridiron favor, we stand upon the cliff's edge overlooking the Football Promised Land (which oddly resembles the god-awful desert of Arizona), the proverbial Land of Milk and Honey spread out before our very eyes. All that remains is one final conquest, one additional obstacle, one solitary remaining test. With a sometimes-goofy coach named Dabo and a penchant for "Clemsoning," few expected this year's incarnation of the Tigers to step into the aforementioned limelight. Indeed a worthy opponent for our beloved Crimson Tide, but one that must too fall at the blade of our vaunted conquering army in crimson.
The friends met for dinner, as they did the second Sunday of every month, at a small Italian restaurant on the Upper East Side. There were three couples: Marty and Barbara, Jerry and Maureen, and John and Marcia, who had recently returned from a weeklong island getaway to celebrate their twenty-ninth wedding anniversary. “Were the beaches beautiful. ” the friends asked. Marcia said, “You had to see it to believe it. The ocean was like bathwater. Meanwhile, the people all speak English. “And we were harassed,” she told the friends. They followed us down the beach like cats. John sat across the table, swirling his spaghetti. He glanced up at Marcia, nodded, winked. The friends wanted to know what the prostitutes had looked like, how they’d dressed, what they’d said. “They looked like normal people,” Marcia said, shrugging. “You know, just young, poor people, locals. They kept saying, ‘Hello, nice people. Nice massage for nice people. “Little did they know. ” John joked, furrowing his eyebrows like a maniac. The friends laughed. “We’d read about it in the guidebook,” Marcia said. You don’t even look them in the eye. The beach boys. And, really, one wonders how anybody can starve in a place like that.
