Why a congresswoman started cooking — and 'eating clean' — at 47 - Washington Post

) prepares Roasted Brussels Sprouts With Pomegranate Quinoa to share with fellow members of the Vegetarian Lunch Club at the Democratic National Committee. Wasserman Schultz started cooking and eating whole, additive-free foods in February 2014 in an effort to be healthier. Debbie Wasserman Schultz was carefully positioning roasted Brussels sprouts, fresh pomegranate seeds and sauteed portobello chunks on a fluffy sea of quinoa. By noon, the dish that her husband and two of their three children back home in Florida would never have eaten would be savored by co-workers here, along with a second cook’s offering: also quinoa, but with a Mexican accent. Since December, 15 Democratic National Committee staffers and Wasserman Schultz, their chairwoman, have nourished one another Mondays through Thursdays when Congress is in session. In the Vegetarian Lunch Club, they strive to share good food, save money on restaurants and maybe drop a few pounds, with each person cooking just twice a month. Members usually take laden plates back to their desks, although one charter veggie clubber confessed to sneaking out for a roast beef sandwich on a day she’d brought in food. It began when staffer Amy Kroll told co-workers about the vegan lunch bunch at her previous job, complete with Tumblr and Twitter accounts and a waiting list. She asked to organize one at the DNC, and Wasserman Schultz promptly joined.

Courtney Williams Takes Control, Guides South Florida To AAC Final - Hartford Courant

That's when Courtney Williams, the conference's leading scorer, grabbed control of the game. After a Tulane basket tied it, Williams had another answer — she buried a three-pointer as the shot clock expired. Williams ended with 21 points, none more important than her burst late in the game. The Bulls prevailed with a 78-69 win, advancing to Monday night's tournament title game. A week ago, UConn beat USF 88-65 in the Huskies' tightest conference win of the season. USF almost fell short, as Tulane (22-10) staged a second-half comeback after the Bulls took a 57-46 lead with 9 minutes, 51 seconds left in the game. Later, it was 63-63 when Williams beat the buzzer with a three-pointer from behind the three-point arc. "I think I've proven that I can take that shot, so I think that [Fernandez] trusts me to take that shot," Williams said. That shot deflated Tulane and sent USF to the victory. Forward Alisia Jenkins led USF with 22 points and 15 rebounds, her second double-double in a row. Jenkins led the conference in rebounding (11. 1 per game) and was 10th in scoring (12. 4), but she landed on the All-Conference second team. There's no arguing with the first team: UConn's Breanna Stewart, Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis and Morgan Tuck, East Carolina's Jada Payne, and Williams.

Paul White: For baseball lifer, game goes on - USA TODAY

That was 20 years ago and was meaningful to me because, for the first time in my life, I was older than every major league player. Now, I’ve been prodded to publicly reflect on another — my own retirement after all 33 years of USA TODAY’s existence, including a midseason detour to try something we first called Baseball Weekly. The past 26 years have been nothing but baseball for me, including the day in 1990 when we debuted something we called the expanded box score. It’s pretty much the one you see every day now, but it was a drastic departure from tradition. to more than double the information about a game you could get from the box score. And there was Bryant Gumbel on Today the morning after opening day, waving the newspaper and asking for his old box scores back. A year later, there was Baseball Weekly , another winter’s focus because the guys who ran our company were appalled that The Sporting News no longer would be printing box scores and said, “We can put together our own publication … can’t you. And plenty more has happened since in baseball — indelible memories as well as smudges we won’t be able to forget — which is the point.
