SUGAR LAND, Texas — Jack Dorshaw would like to make it to 100 years old. Dorshaw is 96. He’s flown in three wars. But when he gets to telling his story at his birthday party in his Sugar Land retirement community, a table of family around him, he skips around, waving away years at a time with humorous impatience. About finishing high school, he said, “There was some talk about graduating me, I was somewhere in the top 90 percent of my class. And finding work in a factory: “It’s the best I could do. ”. On serving two years with the Marine Corps Forces Reserve before being discharged to care for his ill father: “They gave me a bus ticket back to Philadelphia. Yet only now are his long-ago musical theater dreams fully coming true: “ An American in Paris ,” the first Broadway show that Wheeldon has directed as well as choreographed, opens in the Palace Theatre on Sunday. The show opens with a big dance number, closes with a 14-minute ballet and, with ballet dancers in the leading roles, it relies on dancing all the way through to propel the plot. “An American in Paris” also reflects the fancies of an Englishman in New York, where Wheeldon has spent more than half his life. With concentric archways lit up like giant makeup mirrors, the set recalls the stage of Radio City Music Hall and hints at the flashing, swooping lines of Wheeldon’s boyhood obsession with the “Starlight Express” steam engines come to life.
