The clock that won't lose a second in five BILLION years - Daily Mail

The clock that won't lose a second in five BILLION years - and is so sensitive it shows how gravity affects time Clock will remain accurate longer than the age of Earth Named by Guinness book of records as most accurate clock Team found time... The 'strontium lattice clock' is 50% more accurate than the previous record holder, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) quantum logic clock. Researchers say the clock is so accurate, it can even reveal the effect gravity has on time. Atomic clocks operate by means of atoms oscillating between two energy levels. In the strontium lattice clock, a few thousand atoms of strontium are held in a column of laser optical traps. Scientists detect the clock's 'ticks' - 430 trillion of them a second - by bathing the atoms in very stable red laser light.

New American atomic timepiece won't miss a second for 300 million years - Daily Mail

If you thought your watch was accurate, think again - the Us government has revealed the world's most accurate clock - and they say it won't lose or gain a second in 300 million years. Department of Commerce's National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) says the new atomic clock, called NIST-F2, will now be the U. S. civilian time and frequency standard. It is three times more accurate than previous atomic clocks, and uses a 'fountain' of cesium atoms to determine the exact length of a second. Both clocks use a 'fountain' of cesium atoms to determine the exact length of a second. That agency collates data from atomic clocks around the world to produce Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), the international standard of time. NIST-F1 and NIST-F2 are called fountain clocks because the cesium atoms are tossed in the air and fall back down inside a vertical tube during a key routine repeated thousands of times an hour.
