No question: Apple Watch trounces Android Wear The Apple Watch is not the first smartwatch. But If you're into Timex or Swatch, the Apple Watch's digital capabilities likely don't justify its expense beyond the techno crowd. Also like Android Wear devices, the Apple Watch's screen is hard to read in sunlight, even if you crank the brightness up to the max setting. In addition to the notifications and glance preferences you set in the Apple Watch app on your iPhone, you can control some functions directly from the Apple Watch's Settings app, such as text size, brightness, and Do Not Disturb mode. You can even set the watch's time forward, if you're the kind of person who does that to make sure you're not late. Apple's taken much more care than Google in making the Apple Watch highly capable and customizable in a sensible, sophisticated way. For example, you can set the time to be several minutes fast, so people who always run late can fool themselves into being on time. The Apple Watch lets you treat the watch as a watch, yet it also knows the real time to ensure that alarms and appointments alert you when they actually should.
So, what did I do. I actually went back to wearing a normal wristwatch, one with a little battery that spins a motor connected to a pair of arms -- one longer than the other -- that point at sequential numbers printed on a dial. It's an interesting thing, strapping on a plain 'ol wristwatch after months of wearing something "smart. " Measuring battery life with a calendar suddenly feels like a novel thing, as does looking at a display that is truly, positively, always on. It's an interesting thing, strapping on a plain 'ol wristwatch after months of wearing something "smart. I liked the simplicity of the Pebble, but wanted something with heart-rate monitoring. But I wanted more utility than your average fitness device provides. And, while I liked the Android Wear devices, I needed something with better battery life. When the Microsoft Band was announced, it seemed to fall perfectly into the sweet spot between these three categories of devices. But, building a battery into the band poses two problems. First, it doesn't flex properly around your wrist like a strap should. I found it impossible to put these on or take them off while wearing the Band. And, should you forget to take off the Band before removing a garment like that, you risk having a hand ripped off when it inevitably catches in the sleeve.
After initially dismissing the Apple Watch as a design joke, TAG Heuer’s luxury watch guru is singing a new tune. “It’s a fantastic product, an incredible achievement,” Jean-Claude Biver, head of the watch division at TAG’s parent company LVMH, told Bloomberg. The Apple Watch connects me to the future. That’s a 180-degree change of opinion from Biver’s initial reaction to the Apple Watch last September. “It’s too feminine and looks too much like the smartwatches already on the market… To be totally honest, it looks like it was designed by a student in their first trimester. Yesterday, Biver told Bloomberg that TAG Heuer is developing its own smartwatch to counter the Apple Watch. If the name TAG Heuer sounds familiar, it’s because Apple poached one of its executives before the Apple Watch was announced. TAG’s upcoming smartwatch will also abandon the revered “Swiss Made” label, which requires at least 50 percent of the watch’s components to be made in Switzerland. Biver said the Apple Watch mainly threatens watches under the $2,000 price point. Apple hasn’t revealed pricing beyond the base model’s $349, but it’s looking like Jony Ive was right when he said Swiss watchmakers are f**ked.
