As most know, I was recently named an Official Blogger for the National Genealogical Society (NGS) conference to be held in St. Charles, Missouri (local host: St. Louis Genealogical Society) in mid-May. I am looking forward to it for many reasons including the strong program with many great choices, meeting some old and new friends and rooming with my good friend Karen. This is my third NGS conference, having attended Cincinnati three years ago and Richmond last year. I remember being slightly overwhelmed at the first one and thought that first-timers and even “multiple-timers” might appreciate some tips about “Conference Survival. ” Since we are six + weeks in advance of the conference, this first post focuses on the things you can do now to enhance your experience. Download the mobile app. I love this app. I loved it so much back in 2013 that I encouraged another national organization to which I belong to use it also. I have an iPhone so I went to the App Store for the download. You will find it by searching for “National Genealogical Society. org/attend/mobile-app/ This year they have added some tool tips–hints for how to use the app. Did I say I love this app. Once the mobile app is downloaded, start reviewing all the “Sessions” options and make some selections now.
Student Life: You live it, and at YouAlberta, we share it. YouAlberta is the official blog about student life at the U of A. As current students, our contributors know what it's like to balance study, work, and play. Each week, we'll bring you stories about U of A students, for U of A students (although we invite everyone to follow our adventures). We invite you to share your experiences too, so if you have an idea for a story, send it our way. I vowed to power down and stay offline, even for just one day. I couldn’t power down my iPhone because without it I could have slept through my exercise class. Next time I make a bet about going offline for a whole day, I will make sure that my phone is not my alarm clock. And I will make sure that I have no important morning events to attend. But in retrospect, it would probably be best if I just get an alarm clock. I spent hours on Beartracks looking at classes trying to organize next year’s schedule. It was kind of important I do this schedule building right, like REALLy important, actually. How did people even register for classes before the internet. For the next day. 9:00 am the next day. I was feeling guilty that I hadn’t been “offline” for basically any part of the day, so I walked to Rutherford Library and prepared myself to sit at a table (not a computer desk) where I hoped to read an actual book.
The day that smart phones became available, travel changed forever. Immediately, my smart phone became my watch, my alarm clock, calendar, address book, notebook, mirror, and even my flashlight, lessening the number of devices and the weight I needed to carry. As more and more travel apps became available, my smart phone quickly became my most valuable travel accessory. But with literally thousands of apps related to travel, figuring out which are truly useful can be daunting, so I put together the following list of my favorite and most beneficial apps:. One of the most confusing issues that travelers deal with is currency conversions, but with XE Currency Converter, the process is simple. The free version allows tracking 10 currencies simultaneously, while the pro version ($1. 99) allows for 20 currencies, though both versions show the conversions for 180+ different currencies.
