) I was just thinking about it, and its kind of weird that you guys read so much about my life, my daily struggles, my funny moments, yet I feel like theres so much in your lives that I’m missing out on or not up to date with. This past week was the long awaited Semana Santa, or Holy Week, one of the biggest parts/events of Sevilla’s culture, and also a 11 day break from school, which was much needed. Classes finished on Thursday, we had our lovely weekend in Sevilla, then Sunday Rizzo, Sarah Sullivan and I grabbed our trusty backpacks, passports, and spirits of adventure and jetted off for the South of France. We left Sevilla to go to Toulouse, then were going to go by train to Marseille. We checked the weather before we left and realized it wasn’t gonna be quiet as warm as the 85 degree high in Sevilla, so we brought extra layers, but I was sure not prepared for the cold weather and incredible wind we encountered as soon as we... We actually ran into another CNU student in the airport, who is also studying in Sevilla but with another program, and we found out he was going to Toulouse as well. and get this, he took a french class, so as we were waiting in line to board the plane, he was oh so kind to teach us pretty important phrases like Bonjour, and je suis perdu, and my personal favorite, Parlez Vous Anglais. While in the Toulouse airport, our first priority was to find a map, like always.
I have a job in a newsagent’s in Dublin and in my spare time I write books. Nothing exciting that is. I dream of being a great writer one day, but so far, that dream is so far away I can’t even see it through clouds of rejections from publishers. I have a stack of rejection papers from publishers as high as my coffee table, but that doesn’t hold me back. I know I will make it one day, maybe the time just isn’t right. It all started when I wrote articles for an online paper. People were very enthusiastic about what I wrote and about what I still write, because I haven’t stopped writing, but publishers don’t seem to share my opinion. Looking for inspiration is not very difficult, but writing a book is very different from writing stories for a newspaper. I just have to keep trying to write this one masterpiece. I should tell her that I really appreciate what she does for me. It must be difficult for her to have a daughter who is so unsuccessful in life. If it wasn’t for her, I would survive on bread and peanut butter, because I don’t like to cook for myself. I haven’t seen any of my friends for weeks now and don’t know if I even have friends anymore. That something like a radioactive virus has killed the whole of humanity, and I am the only one alive, that would be something to write about. I drag my feet back to the desk where a blank word file anxiously looks at me. I sigh and put my head on the keyboard.
The title of this blog happened to be a song that I made up on the way back to my hotel in Cebu, Sunday January 18th 2015. After my first Pinay girlfriend, Melody told me many years ago about an annual celebration in the provinces capital, Cebu... the oldest city in the Philippines. Even though my cooler head began to prevail sometime this week, I’m going to take you on a journey with me as I recall my short trip to The Philippines. I started with a Philippines Airlines flight to Manila. I must say, I began my trip quite optimistic. Even though my two Filipino co-workers and the Pinay at the Etihad Airways check-in desk tried their best to convince me that going on this trip alone was probably ill-advised. I of course went alone anyway. In my head, I pictured 5’6″ Filipino men thinking they were going to work me over for my pocket change. I’ve been round the world and I-I-I’ve never been robbed. Never been beaten up. Never been kidnapped. I of course was seated in an isle seat towards the very rear of the fuselage, you know where it tapers off into barely enough space to have a galley and a latrine. There was a Filipino man behind me, barking at a Cabin Crew member [I feel so sorry for them, I really do] about needing to use the in-flight wifi to notify someone in Manila that he’d be late.
