I had always assumed the words ‘Time for Tea’ emblazoned upon the fascia of a narrow building in Shoreditch High St indicated that it was an occasional tea shop. But when I enquired the meaning of this sign from Johnny Vercoutre, who has lived there for the past twenty years and who painted the text in question, he gave an unexpected reply “I’d like to drive a long truck with a line of dancing girls into... Originally constructed as the London Savings Bank, it served as the premises of Andrews the Clockmakers who supplied the timepiece to St Leonard’s Shoreditch next door, before becoming a pawnbroker and finally Clarkes the Stationers, when Johnny... The Next Generation Sunday Feb 7th. Every day we visit homes where there are few, if any, modern conveniences. A single electric bulb perhaps, if the family has electricity, and running water at some point during the day. For example, Vicente, a 24-year old man married with two young children, has constructed a home consisting of wooden poles supporting corrugated metal roofing. one of the walls is stone, properly built by a mason some years ago. The other three walls are just piles of jagged rock stacked up, waiting until he can afford the cement to build them properly. In the meantime he supports his young family with temporary work, employed by our friend Tomas. If he accepts, he will attend for six months, three days a week, five hours each day. In the meantime, when we leave for home, Vicente will be asked to continue our work, as he will then be familiar with how we build the beds. With a little imagination, the same design will work for bunk beds (although the people are a little leery of them), tables, and chairs. Three days ago we got to experience what the people here do every day. We lost our supply of running water. We had to haul our water into the house from the wash tub outside, which has its own supply of water pumped up from the lake.
