The morning time can be a pleasant, rejuvenated time of day for some, but for those night owls out there, the sound of an alarm penetrating their peaceful sleep cycle can be dreadful. In her article, Why The Snooze Button Is Ruining Your Sleep , author Sophia Breene explained that the first alarm clock was constructed in 1787 by a New Hampshire native named Levi Hutchins, set to ring every morning at 4:00 a. m. (yikes) A few... One survey found that more than a third of Americans hit the snooze button three or more times daily, and more than half of people ages 25 to 34 press snooze daily. But this subconscious habit may be sabotaging your daily energy levels, in fact, an alarm clock all together may not be a good idea. During a sleeping cycle, the body shifts into different brain level states, the most crucial being the REM state. Before our bodies awaken, the brain sends out hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline which help us to shift from the REM state to a lighter state of sleep. When we hit our snooze button multiple times, particularly if we haven’t had enough sleep, we are actually depriving our bodies of the more crucial type of sleep, REM.
The Big Ben Chime Alarm movement uses some of the same time parts as the Baby Ben movement:. Most Westclox pivots are polished, hard steel wire. The third through fifth (escape) wheel and pallet pivots are made this way, but they may wear their pivot holes enough to need bushings. Westclox center wheel arbors are made of turned soft steel wire, and are not finished very well. They may cause bad wear to the front center wheel pivot hole, requiring a bushing. The back center pivot can wear, but unless the wear is super-bad, I prefer not to install a bushing, as a bushing may pop out when removing the time set knob. Typically, I do the following pivot work to a Chime Alarm movement:. Smooth the center arbor pivots with a pivot file, then polish them. Bush one or both time third wheel pivot holes. Bush the time fifth (escape wheel) pivot holes. Bush the pallet pivot holes (this helps the clock run a lot better, as it reduces power-losing side-to-side motion of the pallet arbor. Center Wheel front pivot: #26 bushing, shorten in the lathe to be just slightly longer than the plate thickness, then insert and rivet flush with the front and back of the plate. 5mm, bushing #5. T5 and pallet pivots: pivot diameter.
