Since 2013, Canon Robert McClean has been climbing St Oswin’s Church clock tower each evening to switch the bells off manually, affording nearby residents a restful slumber. But his legs have now been delivered from more years of steep stone ascents and descents as a mechanism has been fitted to the bells, silencing the chimes during the night. The automatic device means that between the hours of 11pm and 7am the Westminster chimes will not sound, although the tower’s bells will still toll the hour. Built in 1886 and dedicated to Northumbrian saint St Oswin, the church’s clock tower boasts six bells which sound the hour, with the chimes sounding every quarter hour. The £1,395 for the mechanism to silence the chimes was raised by a group of local residents, with a £465 contribution from Wylam Parish Council. Speaking at the meeting that approved the donation, parish council chairman Anne Francis said: “They say in their letter that if we get any negative feedback about our involvement, it should be referred to the church warden, Fiona Oomes, not the... Mrs Oomes said: “People took the opportunity to express their feelings to the vicar, and particularly his wife, about the plan to silence the bells.

Keats Community Library presents a stellar line-up of actors and writers to commemorate Hampstead and the country during the First World War. Actors Michael Palin (Monty Python), Robert Powell (Holby City) and Lee Montague (Moulin Rouge) join actresses Sally Giles (Midsomer Murders) and Dearbhla Molloy (Foyle’s War) in performing a unique evening of readings, songs, and more. The extracts that will be read include Ham&High reports from the time of the First World War, letters from the front and memorable songs of the period. Of the event, Mr Powell said: “Because the programme includes those stirring songs from the period, it will be both a commemoration of the war and the extraordinary verse and prose it produced, as well as a celebration of the spirit of the British... “I think it will be a very uplifting experience and even for those who think they know about the war, there’ll be something new. Italian-born Ivana Bartoletti has given up on her hope of standing to replace Mr Dobson having been told by the Home Office on Saturday that her application for British citizenship is still being processed. Under Electoral Commission rules, parliamentary candidates must be British citizens or eligible Commonwealth citizens to stand and Ms Bartoletti currently meets neither requirement. Last month, the Ham&High reported on Ms Bartoletti’s race against the clock to secure citizenship , at which point she said she had “faith” in the Home Office processing her application in time. “However, the deadline has passed and on Saturday I received a letter from the Home Office informing me that it is still dealing with my application. “For Labour to thrive, we need new ideas and passion - and we also need our Labour politicians to look like the communities we wish to represent. Holborn and St Pancras Labour Party will select its candidate for next year’s general election on December 13.
