Metropolitan Opera 2013-14 Review - Falstaff: A Massive Achievement Worthy of ... - Latinos Post

Despite being arguably Verdi's finest work, "Falstaff" has not been a major fixture at the Metropolitan Opera. Prior to Friday night's new production premiere, the work had only received 175 performances at the famed house since 1895 when the work was premiered at the Met. Moreover, the last time the opera company had performed the work was in 2005. "Falstaff" is becoming increasingly popular around the world and the hope is that after Friday night's performance and the crowd's reception, the Met will stage it more... The new production is by superstar director Robert Carsen. Carsen directed a hugely popular Eugene Onegin at the Met for his 1997 debut and has directed opera productions at all the great houses around the world. His Falstaff is a tremendous feat mainly because he manages to combine the styles of modern and classic operatic tradition in an energetic and cohesive manner. The first scene takes place in a lavish hotel room with what looks like oak walls, a visual motif throughout the entire production. This scene introduces Falstaff in his "omnipotence. In one moment, Falstaff receives the bill for his feast. The two "idiots" run about looking for a place to hide and at one point consider Falstaff's closet.

New Yorker Cartoon Editor Explores What Makes Us 'Get It' - WABE 90.1 FM

Bob Mankoff has been contributing cartoons to The New Yorker ever since 1977 and now, as cartoon editor, he evaluates more than 500 cartoons submitted to the magazine each week. Mankoff is proud of the many cartoons that have been published under his aegis. His most well-known cartoon shows an executive looking at his desk calendar, saying to someone on the phone: "No, Thursday's out. How about never — is never good for you. When he adapted that quip into a cartoon, he "switched the position so that the guy saying it is in a position of superiority. He submitted that cartoon to The New Yorker in 1993. "It turned out to be one of the most reprinted cartoons in New Yorker history," he says. "I don't think most people know what's going to be in their obituary, but I do. ". That caption is now the title of his new memoir, a book that traces his circuitous path to cartooning and the psychology of cartoon humor. Interview Highlights On the New Yorker cartoon caption contest. Humor itself and your response to humor — that's one of the things I learned in doing this job and even writing this book, especially the caption contest — is very, very, varied and there's a huge amount of variability between subjects and there's...

Sometimes a cigar galaxy is just a cigar galaxy - Discover Magazine (blog)

Different objects behave differently, emitting light in different ways. So, for example, a cool dinky star might give off very little blue light — through a blue filter it virtually disappears — while a hot, massive star blasts out blue light. Having said that, I recognized right away that this image is the core of the nearby galaxy M82… but it still looks funny to me:. [Click to galactinate, or grab the huge 12. 5 Mb image. One reason this new image from Hubble looks funny to me is that there aren’t as many stars in it as I expect. M82, also called the Cigar Galaxy due to its elongated shape, is pretty close as galaxies go, about 12 million light years away. It’s one of the closest large galaxies in the Universe, and a Hubble image usually shows it littered with stars, so closely packed they form a bluish background glow in most pictures. And while that background of stars is there, it’s more diminished than usual because in this image astronomers used a series of filters that accentuate the light emitted by gas. While stars put out this kind of light as well, these filters downplay starlight and crank up the volume on, um, gaslight.
