We decided to go and visit two places that both Matt and myself had been wanting to have a look at over the years, but the boys had been a bit too small beforehand. The first one was the 'World famous' Laurel and Hardy museum in Ulverston:. Matt's been a huge fan of the comic duo since he was small and each time we'd visited the Lake District before, he'd jokingly dropped hints about going there (which I'd strategically ignored). This time though, the boys themselves were quite interested in going as they have all become fans of Laurel and Hardy. Stan Laurel (nee Arthur Stanley Jefferson) was born in Ulverston, into an acting and theatre-management family. I've never been a big Laurel and Hardy fan myself, as I explained to the man who runs the museum (which was started by his grandfather or possibly great-grandfather), but since being married to Matt I've come to enjoy them more and more. The museum was quite small and has grown from this one man's collection, but it was very informative and I certainly learned a lot about them. It was quite a small shop but like most yarn-shops it was very well-stocked and full of temptation.
Whether it be a piece of furniture, an old clock, a car, or a house I find it fascinating to see a skilled craftsmen take what is old and damaged and restore it back to its original beauty. One antique item that I have is a pulpit my grandfather found in a central Illinois barn in the 1930s. It was old then so I have no idea when it was made or what it was made for. Unfortunately by then it had been damaged by regular flooding in that old cellar resulting in the bottom six inches incurring water damage. Due to the absence of proper tools, I simply cut the damaged wood off and refinished the rest of the pulpit. In Ephesians 2:1-10 Paul describes a beautiful restoration that is taking place as God restores a dead, enslaved, and condemned people who by grace He is making into His glorious and holy temple (2:21) or as verse 10 says “ his workmanship. In fact, Paul describes them as dead, enslaved and condemned. Second, they are enslaved to the “ prince of the power of the air, ” held as captives to the value system or “ course ” of this world, and living in “ the passions of the flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and mind ” (v. 3). As a result... “ But God” did not see it that way and rather than leave us dead, enslaved and condemned, chose to graciously save His children through giving the gift of faith.
Last time I was talking about going back to work. Immediate hurt. I could feel my back knotting up. By the time I got into the building it was getting hard to put one foot in front of the other. By the time I made it outside the training room I could barely move. It seemed to be pinching nerves so bad it was hurting down both legs. I had even ridden over that curb several times before going to work, just making sure I would be able to handle getting to work okay. I think my back was hurt so easily because I was already hurting from all the sitting I was doing in training. It appears that sitting for long periods is my downfall. I have been working on building stamina by keeping moving and sitting or laying down when needed. Long drives in the car hurt. I generally hurt all the time. I guess the difference is that the sitting still hurts me while stiffening me up. So even though the movement hurts, it keeps me limber. Being limber keeps me from hurting my back so easily. He said he could never sit still for long stretches either, it hurts his back to do so. Other people I know with back injuries are the same.
