When the earliest human ancestors left the trees and struck out to make a new life for themselves on the ground, there was no going back, a new study suggests. Researchers examined the ankle bones of those early people and compared them to those of chimpanzees , and say that by 4 million years ago the proto-humans were no longer adapted for skillful tree climbing. Researchers estimate that the chimpanzee and human lineages split about 5 million to 7 million years ago. One group argues–based on evidence that early members of the human line lived in woodland environments and had curved fingers and toes that were good for climbing–that the first hominins spent some time in the trees even as they adapted to their... There’s an awful lot of lumping going on when you just say “early humans”. That arboreal behavior gave way to obligate bipedalism with the emergence of Homo a million years earlier than the most recent date mentioned in the piece isn’t news, and something of a no-brainer (inverted pun intentional).
It's then that Count Tibor Kalnoky begins to tell the tale of the first time he visited the village witch. "One of my sons was suffering from sleepwalking," he says, staring into the campfire as he pours out a round of palinka, a fiery Romanian fruit brandy. He sips his brandy, stirring the embers of the campfire with his leather boot. "She used an old remedy which involved melting some lead in an iron pot and then looking at the shape the lead made as it cooled, rather like reading tea leaves. He looks up from the fire, downs his palinka and breaks into a roguish grin. With his dapper hair, jodhpurs and knee-high boots, Kalnoky doesn't strike you as the kind of man who would believe in witches' cures. Since then, the count has learnt to embrace Transylvania's old ways. "It's good luck if a stork nests on your rooftop," he says, ducking through the timber gateway of a courtyard cottage, one of several he's renovated around Miklosvar over the past decade. We've got a nest that hasn't been used for years, but I'm not brave enough to remove it. ".
