Owner of hundreds of Cuckoo clocks finishing museum - KARE

MINNEAPOLIS - If we told you that hundreds of cuckoo clocks hang on the walls of a North Loop warehouse, your ears would be poised. To Jim Fiorentino's way of thinking, even a clock collection like his, is best enjoyed by eyes. "The cuckoo sound don't thrill me at all," he says. More specifically, it's the hand-carved leaves, woodland animals and mountain chalets that give Fiorentino a charge, the 19th century work of craftsmen from Germany's Black Forest, ornamenting the clocks that hang neatly throughout the warehouse. "These aren't da Vinci's or anything like that," says Fiorentino emphatically. More than 800 clocks, of all shapes and sorts, cover the walls of his building, but it's the cuckoo clocks of which 91-year-old Fiorentino is proudest. He collected his first in the 1970s, a cuckoo clock that had been in his home as boy. Fiorentino saved the clock as his brother was preparing to throw it away. Those in disrepair, Fiorentino repaired. "I'm a saver, I'm a keeper," says Fiorentino. His legs no longer easily lift him to his clock repair shop on the second floor and his eyes aren't sharp enough anymore do fine carving with his woodworking tools.

Why I hate Christmas markets - Telegraph.co.uk

In the 1290s Albert permitted the city of Vienna to hold the world’s first December market. With scarcely a shadow of a doubt, this was the forerunner of today’s Christmas market - and so the single most catastrophic development in the history of retailing. There will be chalets and fake snow and fake greenery, really stupid-looking reindeer and literally billions of fairly lights across the entire western world. I embrace with gusto Yuletide and almost everything which goes with it : baubles, knitwear, cousins, trees, children, carols, chablis at 11am and turkey some time later. I draw the line only at Christmas pudding. (We once tried Christmas pudding on a Parisian couple. Nor do I object at all to the commercialisation of Christmas. If we want an abundance of food and presents, somebody’s got to be selling them. There’s plenty of time, anyway, to do all the buying and also to sing carols, be nice, feed robins, embrace widows and orphans and otherwise work for peace on earth. So no, the dismay generated by the Christmas market is not due to its selling stuff but to the sort of stuff it is selling, that seasonal attack of terrifying trinketry - wire jewellery, tomato-scented soap, miniature pottery rabbits, candied...

Bavaria: skiing in a winter hinterland - The Guardian

Kevin, our guide, calls these forests "Little Canada", and flying across the pristine white landscape, you can easily imagine snow-cats waiting to take you back to your base in the Rockies. But the mountains south of Munich also offer swathes of empty terrain perfect for affordable backcountry skiing. We drove around 480km, up winding mountain roads, on autobahns, across numerous mountain ranges, dipping over the Austrian border and back again a couple of times. Our first stop was in the Bavarian village of Oberstaufen, 168km south-west of Munich. It is home to the Hochgrat – at 1,834m the highest mountain in a range called Nagelfluhkette and a favourite of Bavarian off-piste fans. Every February since 2006 the gruelling annual Skirallye has been held here: a race where contestants first climb the peak with touring skis and then race down on the ungroomed slopes. But, fortunately, the Hochgrat also offers a small range of 4km powder runs with no hiking required and hardly any crowds.
