Belle and Sebastian grant twee wishes in Toronto - blogTO (blog)

Belle and Sebastian, Glasgow's musical ambassadors of twee, returned to the Massey Hall stage Wednesday night for a jubilant performance, and Toronto love-in - the band seems to quite like our city. Though they last played Toronto in 2013 for the inaugural Toronto Urban Roots Fest (TURF), frontman Stuart Murdoch countered that a visit to Toronto isn't quite 'Toronto' enough unless the band plays Massey Hall (their last Massey show was in 2010... Afterwards, Murdoch proclaimed that this was the band's first time performing that song, and the dance piece was unique to the Toronto show. Following that, the set list picked up the pace with mostly upbeat numbers - "I'm a Cuckoo," "If She Wants Me" and new songs "The Party Line" and "Allie. " Murdoch was quick to mention another Toronto connection: the music video for "The Party Line" was filmed in Toronto (by Scott Cudmore), with an open call to B&S fans to participate in background group dancing scenes. Later, during "Sukie in the Graveyard," Murdoch invited one elated female fan (who had raised her hand as a video shoot participant) to dance with him on stage, even giving her his fedora to wear during the song.

Fairy wrens teach secret passwords to their unborn chicks to tell them apart ... - Discover Magazine (blog)

In Australia, a pair of superb fairy-wrens return to their nest with food for their newborn chick. They abandon it, flying off to start a new nest and a new family somewhere else. The bird in their nest was a Horsfield’s bronze-cuckoo. These birds are “brood parasites” – they lay their eggs in those of other birds, passing on their parenting duties to some unwitting surrogates. The bronze-cuckoo egg looks very much like a fairy-wren egg, although it tends to hatch earlier. The cuckoo chick then ejects its foster siblings from the nest, so it can monopolise its foster parents’ attention. But fairy-wrens have a way of telling their chicks apart from cuckoos. The embryonic chicks learn it, and when they hatch, they incorporate it into their begging calls. Horsfield’s bronze-cuckoos lay their eggs too late in the breeding cycle for their chicks to pick up the same notes. As these evolutionary arms races continue, the parasites typically become ever better mimics, and the hosts typically become ever more discerning parents. If the parents can recognise the parasitic eggs, they’ll eject or destroy them. This is why the common cuckoo has.
