Kovels: Comic hankie goes for super price
Q: I have a very old cuckoo clock. It belonged to my great-great-great-grandparents. It must have been made in the early 1800s. On the hour, a boy and girl pop out of the house-shaped clock and a cuckoo sings. On the half hour, a cuckoo appears and ...

'Magician' looks at the life of Orson Welles
That is, even something as familiar as Charles Foster Kane's death scene, with the shattered snow globe, or Harry Lime's “cuckoo clock” quip, in “The Third Man,” retain a freshness and torque that remain uniquely Wellesian. Yes, Carol Reed directed ...

A Charleston County grand jury on Monday indicted the former North Charleston policeman who fatally shot Walter Scott, marking the second time in the past year that a white South Carolina officer has been formally charged with murder in a black... The expected milestone in prosecutors’ case against Michael Slager came two months after the officer fired eight times as the 50-year-old Scott ran away. Captured on a bystander’s cellphone, a video of the shooting became a visual battle cry for residents who long lamented police tactics in North Charleston and for activists nationwide who questioned how quickly officers resort to deadly force. A team of the area’s three top prosecutors plans to pursue a trial in Charleston despite concerns about fairness. Ninth Circuit Solicitor Scarlett Wilson said Monday that she had received the last part of a file from the State Law Enforcement Division, whose agents examine most officer-involved shootings in South Carolina. A SLED investigator, not prosecutors, posed the evidence to the grand jury earlier Monday. Wilson said she has not seen evidence supporting charges against anyone else connected with the shooting. Slager was at least the fourth South Carolina law officer to be charged in a shooting since 2009 and the second charged with murder.
"Monday night, party night," said Stuart Murdoch, guiding light of the veteran Scottish indie band Belle and Sebastian without a hint of sarcasm. We're just three songs into the band's wonderful 100-minute show last night at a packed House of Blues and Murdoch and his mates have already fulfilled that promise. Kicking off an extensive North American tour in support of their fine new album "Girls in Peacetime Want to Dance," there were no opening night jitters. The band opened with "Nobody's Empire" from the new album, with Murdoch seated at a baby grand and Stevie Jackson delivering one of his many understated, melodic guitar breaks. "I'm a Cuckoo" followed, with the crowd clapping along and Murdoch bouncing around the stage as if he were riding an imaginary pogo stick. This segued into the disco/new wave blast "The Party Line," which continued Murdoch's aerobic workout and got fans dancing as best as they could in the tight space. With Fenway Park just across the street, Murdoch said it would be inappropriate and disrespectful to sing about a New York athlete with opening day just days away.
Mr Dorlay ‘came with the sale’ when Hillier, already a successful enterprise, took over Cronkhill Farm where he worked at them time, minding its herd of 80 cows and 600 pigs. With a child on the way, he said he had little choice but to work for the horticultural company and begin learning the basics of gardening and planting. Mr Dorlay, now 74, helped prepare the plant material for Chelsea in 1965 and, after winning his first gold medal the following year, has played a central role in its success at the show ever since. It has been a great team effort and it's a great achievement for all of us. "You never know what's around the corner but we are talking about going for a 71st and if I can be involved that would be great. Mr Dorlay, who was introduced to the Queen with his team when she visited the show on Monday , has kept meticulous notes on the weather over the last 50 years and he says it helps him make informed decisions on how best to grow particular plant in... He said of his days as a herdsman: “It was great: milking 80 Guernsey cows, looking after 600 pigs, calving at midnight. I used to get up at 4. 30 for 5 o’clock milking - in churn rather than modern dairies. Their names all had the name of the farm in them, so “Cronkhill Blossom” or “Cronkhill Daisy”. Mr Dorlay added: “We were working on the 200 acres which is now the Sir Harold.

Whether pink or blue, we're all agog at royal baby countdown
There is, of course, only one possible outcome to the waiting outside the Lindo wing at St Mary's Paddington: a boy or a girl. That's it. I mean, it's not as if the royal baby might turn out to be a dromedary or something. Yet there's something primal ...
