The Apple Watch: Half Computer, Half Jewelry, Mostly Magical
It believes that it can make the smartwatch a mass-market phenomenon, much as it did digital music players, tablets, and touchscreen phones. A lot more is riding on the arrival of the Apple Watch than how you'll use it to check your incoming text messages....

Watchmakers, watch out for Apple!
What might make the Apple watch a competitor to the Swiss top range chronometers is not its superiority when it comes to the newest technology. This is not what a buyer of a luxurious, often handmade watch is mainly after. Also other traditional ...

Stars' Spins Show Their Ages
This method doesn't work for stars far away: astronomers had to get more inventive. They turned to star clusters. Clusters are valuable astronomical chronometers, because all stars in a particular cluster are born around the same time. Each star then ...

A Failed Metaphor for Intelligent Design
But does “watchmaker” really say God to us in the digital age? If we want to understand God through a technological metaphor, wouldn't the computer programmer, the genetic engineer, or the environmental scientist seem more apt? With accurate clocks ...

Chronometers are crafted items which display the time of day and night. Chronometers originated in the early 18th century and were primarily meant to be useful to navigators. That is not to say that the telling of time is the only purpose of a wristwatch. There are even wrist devices recently introduced in American culture which contain small computers equipped to do everything a laptop can do. As people have begun to carry computers on their person the wristwatch is slowly being replaced by cell... The word chronometer is from the Greek (kronos) meaning time. In Europe the term is a classified term with restrictions upon its use. But for all intents and purposes, the term is generally applied to any device that measures time. The interesting variation in chronometers at this point in history has to do with the markings on the face of the watch. It is common for the face to be segmented into five minute intervals, with the 15 minutes mark at the 1/4 place (the numeral 3), the 30 minutes mark (half hour) at the 1/2 place at the numeral 6 at the bottom of the circle, the 45 minute mark on...
As everyone must know, Apple announced their new wearable, the Apple Watch (which I keep calling an “iWatch”, which I gather is not its name). They are said to run $300 and up (“There’s an Apple Watch for everyone”, at least for everyone with money to burn. ) Bear in mind that it talks to your iPhone or other device, so this is an expensive peripheral for your other (expensive) Apple mobile device. So, what does Apple—the king of user centered design—think they are for. The multiple variations wrap the functions in different looks: ugly fitness tracker look, manly chronometer look, geeky app icons look, and so on. I didn’t see anything that looks particularly chic or “girly”, but what do I know. “Apple Watch makes all the ways you’re used to communicating more convenient. Apple Watch also lets you connect with your favorite people in fun, spontaneous ways — like sending a tap, a sketch, or even your heartbeat. The last feature there is illustrated showing that you and your honey can pair up your watches to send private little love taps and kissy heart messages to the watch screen. Farhad Manjoo write for the NYT, “ Apple Watch Displays Your Digital World, at a Glance ”, suggesting what the main concept is. Well, not my world, of course, but I’m.
Leonard Nimoy died this morning in his home. In honor of Nimoy, here’s my review of a classic Star Trek episode. Spock commands a stranded away team after their shuttlecraft crashes on a planet with hostile giants. Story by Oliver Crawford. Inspired by the 1939 disaster film Five Came Back and taking advantage of a new licensing deal with AMT, Star Trek gives us our first Mr. Spock character study, placing the Vulcan in command of an A story about him and his crew of six others... Meanwhile, Kirk attempts to find the shuttle and its crew in the B story but is constantly reminded the Enterprise is needed elsewhere by High Commissioner Ferris, the authority figure of the week. It’s a classic Star Trek plot and a breakthrough episode for Leonard Nimoy, who was already finding his character before but finally gets to establish him here. It all begins with the launch of a shuttlecraft, a setting introduced to the show courtesy of AMT (originally called Aluminum Model Toys) which agreed to build a miniature shuttle model, a lifesize exterior set, and even the interior set in... With this triple play, the writers are able to have the characters interact with the setting any way they want, and it provides Spock, McCoy and company with a great setting for rich character interplay as the story moves from inside to outside...
