After the first night of the Fare Thee Well celebration featured a decidedly old school setlist, the band closed out their Santa Clara, CA run with material from across the Grateful Dead spectrum, playing with a confidence and comfort that was... From the opening notes of “Feel Like a Stranger,” it was evident this was going to be a much more cohesive, confident night of music as band immediately locked in for a bluesy jam featured standout moments from nearly everyone on stage. While Bruce Hornsby may have been more reserved on opening night, that wasn’t the case last night as the one-time Grateful Dead keyboardist took lead vocals on the following “Brown-Eyed Woman,” a tight performance that also featured Jeff Chimenti... After a Weir-led “Loose Lucy,” Hornsby took lead vocals once again on an emotional and euphoric “Loser,” which culminated in a roaring Anastasio solo, providing the highlight of the first set. The tune also featured Anastasio on additional vocals, creating a beautiful harmony with Weir’s lead. If “Alabama Getaway” was a high point, the following “Black Peter” proved to be the low point as an especially slow version of Workingman’s Dead tune ebbed and flowed with Weir’s passionate vocal work.
Outside the Quicken Loans Arena his fans were quiet in the minutes after the Cavaliers' 103-82 loss in Game 4 of the NBA Finals Thursday night. Drums were beating on the sidewalks, music was blaring from the bars, but they -- thousands of them -- were keeping their thoughts to themselves as they wondered how much more could be asked of LeBron. The Golden State Warriors have regained home-court advantage in what is now a three-game miniseries for the championship. The four teammates who have opened each Finals game alongside him have been coming off the bench for 45 percent of their regular-season careers. James has started more NBA games than the rest of the Cavs' current seven-man rotation combined. "I don't really get involved in it, the whole thing," James was saying early Friday morning of Cleveland's overwhelming desire to win its first major team title since 1964 (Cleveland Browns). "I understand how important this city is and what I mean to this city and what our team means to the city. Warriors refuse to be bullied The Warriors were not as hungry as LeBron's Cavaliers through the first three games of.
GIFs in the Past Loops actually have quite a long history — and it started long before the 1990's when the Graphics Interchange Format first included support for animation (by swapping multiple images in a sequence to form a rudimentary video). Whether it was a spinning disk or a series of mirrors, the end result was actually pretty similar to the GIFs we know today — looping images that play cognitive tricks to allow us to see motion. Ads for movie Coraline were printed as a series of posters inside the subway tunnel, which passengers saw as an animated movie as the train sped by. This is Horse in Motion , a piece by the same Edward Muybridge who invented the movie projector. He created this series of images to settle an argument about whether a horse gets all four feet off the ground at the same time (it does). " Small multiples are a chart form made up of sequences of small images. If we saw a single video of this horse in motion, it might be harder to see differences because we can't hold everything in our working memories. Now here’s the horse is in motion, the GIF edition. Note that rather than repeat this image over and over in space, like small multiples do, we’ve just repeated it over and over.
