One Summer's Day: Make it a date for our photo competition - Belfast Telegraph

Make sure you have saved the date as the Belfast Telegraph has once again teamed up with the Northern Ireland Tourist Board (NITB) to launch the fifth annual mass participation photography event. This competition is unique to any other in that all the photos entered have to be taken on the same day – Saturday, August 2. Mark the date in your diary or set a reminder in your phone, and on that day take a picture that illustrates what... While there are no rules as to what you can snap, Belfast Telegraph picture editor Peter Rainey is urging entrants not to feel restricted to taking photos of landscapes. He said: "One Summer's Day is a very unique and personal competition in that there are no restrictions on what you can take a picture of. It's about choosing the right place at the right time. uk with a short note explaining the content of the picture and what makes it so special and you could be in with a chance of winning a short break in Northern Ireland, courtesy of NITB. Photographs to be taken ONLY on Saturday, August 2, 2014. Entries will be split into three categories – primary school, secondary school and adult. What Makes a Paris Street Parisian? This Program Knows - Discover Magazine (blog)

The particular street signs, windows, and balconies on this street mark it as Parisian. If you find yourself stumped, know that a new software program has you beat: it can identify a city from a single photo of any old street. Almost any street, the program’s designers found, has little details that give away its city, including distinctive street signs, windows, and balconies. To program the new software , researchers at Carnegie Mellon fed it 40,000 Google Street View images from 12 cities, including Paris and New York. These photos contained hundreds of millions of unique visual elements, creating a huge database that allowed the software to pick out which recurring details were typical of which cities. It’s interesting to wonder whether, in the future, machines will pick up on distinctions that even a city’s inhabitants are not conscious of, unique details that they walk past every day but never notice.

E. Coli That Cause Urinary Tract Infections are Now Resistant to Antibiotics - Discover Magazine (blog)

A good thing, too—if the E. coli that usually cause UTIs crawl up the urinary tract, they can cause kidney failure and fatal blood poisoning. Scientists tracking UTIs from 2000 to 2010 found a dramatic uptick in cases caused by E. coli that do not respond to the drugs that are our first line of defense. In examining more than 12 million urine analyses from that period, they found that cases caused by E. coli resistant to ciprofloxacin grew five-fold, from 3% to 17. 1% of cases. coli resistant to the drug trimethoprim-sulfame-thoxazole jumped from 17. 9% to 24. 2%. These are two of the most commonly prescribed antibiotics used to treat UTIs. When they are not effective, doctors must turn to more toxic drugs, and the more those drugs are used, the less effective they in turn become. Some of this growing resistance in E. coli and other bacteria is due to the fact that antibiotics are being overprescribed , handed out to patients who have no bacterial infections. There is also evidence that the genes that give bacteria resistance to drugs are being spread in livestock farming operations, where antibiotics are a common ingredient in animal feed. Very closely related strains of drug-resistant E. coli have been found in people , suggesting that the bugs spread from the birds to humans.
