The miracle of the great Zanesville zoo escape—which began last fall when a depressed, desperate man named Terry Thompson set free his vast collection of exotic animals—was that not a single innocent person was hurt. It also thrust into daylight, if only for a brief moment, a secret world of privately owned exotic animals living off the grid, and often right next door. A little before five o'clock on the evening of October 18, 2011, as the day began to ebb away, a retired schoolteacher named Sam Kopchak left the home he shared with his 84-year-old mother and headed into the paddock behind their house to attend... On the other side of the flimsy fence separating them from his neighbor Terry Thompson's property, Kopchak noticed that Thompson's horses seemed even more agitated. Only when the shape broke out of the circle could Kopchak see that it was a black bear. Kopchak wasn't overly alarmed by this sight, unexpected as it was, maybe because the bear wasn't too big as black bears go, and maybe because it was running away from him. He knew what he'd do: put Red in the barn, go back to the house, report what he'd seen. He and Red had taken only a few steps toward the barn when Kopchak saw something else, close by, just ahead of them on the other side of the fence. Kopchak had lived around here all of his life.

Today, we have the first of a two-part interview series with the five finalists, including the winner in part two. Today : Foreign Figures, Jessica Frech and The Love§trange. Foreign Figures (Steve Michels, Jonny Tanner, Eric Michels & Seth Dunshee). Steve: I'm 27 years old, older brother to Eric Michels, play drums in Foreign Figures and am married to Markelle Michels. I've always been into music and started playing with Steve and Eric Michels in the summer of 2011. They just jammed, didn't form a band or anything. Although he now plays bass in Foreign Figures, he was the group's lead guitarist for the first 11 months. I still play guitar often when writing and recording for the band. Recorded, engineered and mastered Foreign Figures' first project, the Come Alive EP. Gavin: When did you take an interest in music, and what were your favorite acts growing up. Eric: I wish I could say that I grew up listening to all the classics... Instead, I listened to classic rock acts such as Journey and Styx that my dad really liked.
But Chili Cook Offs are a really big deal in the United States. One of the two groups that sanction these events (the OB event is not sanctioned) has 38 Cook Offs listed for California in 2009. Chiliheads are a cantankerous bunch, rarely agreeing on much of anything except for their love of what Texans call “A... The first recorded event, according to author Linda Stradley at the website What’s Cooking America , was at the Texas State Fair in 1952, when Mrs F. G. Ventura of Dallas was crowned the first ever “World Champion Chili Cook. The event that launched the Chili Cook Off phenomena as we now know it took place in 1967 Terlingua, Texas. This seminal event was actually a competition between two writers, one of whom had penned an article for Holiday Magazine boasting this his chili recipe was better than anything that was currently being served in Texas. The recipe included beans, which offended many Texans, and the scene was set for a showdown in a remote mining town, located nearly 300 miles from the nearest commercial airport, to discourage non-Texans from attending. The competition ended in a tie, when the tie breaking judge spit out his chili, declaring that his taste buds were “ruint”, declaring that they would have to re-do the event next year. According to Sports Illustrated coverage of this historic showdown, the judge was given a spoonful of chili which he promptly spit out…. Here’s more on chili and the cook-off itself:.
